The ice hotel flashback is maybe the best depiction of depression I've ever seen.Carol isn't "sad" in the hotel. She's just incapable of getting out of her head or letting her guard down to experience wonder or joy. Even in private, on vacation with her life partner, she keeps her shield of cynicism up. She's a reflexive naysayer. A hotel made of ice sounds crazy. It's cold and impractical so to be positive about it would require her to be receptive/earnest/vulnerable. She can't do it.Meanwhile Helen is naturally receptive, joy comes easy to her and she also is unafraid to advertise her joy and risk judgment and rejection by reaching out. She is open to the attendant's schtick, adopts some of his language about the invigorating cold, and sits in awe of the northern lights, letting Carol's sarcastic remarks bounce right off her. Compare with Carol, who lags behind, doesn't engage with the attendant, barely cares to look at the lights. She's preoccupied with making jokes. She scans Helen's face for what she's supposed to feel because she feels nothing. All she can think about is how her book is being received anyway, which even being a bestseller is not good enough for her.Also, alcohol....For Helen, this is the obviously right time to have a drink. Travel is done, you're on vacation, you're getting settled in, it's freezing cold: have a glass of brandy. That's a healthy relationship with alcohol. Carol on the other hand is usually the one drinking, even pressuring Helen to join her, but in the hotel she not only can't unwind, she doesn't want to. She's keeping her defenses up, resisting giving in to the moment. And you can see the struggle in her eyes in the last moments of the scene, as she stares again at the lights, at last trying and still failing to feel anything while being lovingly embraced by someone looking at the same exact thing and having a magical experience.
