There's something magical about these two decades. Theses are the only two decades I legitimately wish I could have met Hollywood actors and actresses. Please share/tv/ related material from the the decades listed above >Movies >Shorts Information on an actor/actress
La Grande Illusion (1937) is the greatest movie ever made and there are anons who will go their whole lives without watching it. Sad!
The Depression and a world war? This is what you find magical?
>>216924140Where can I watch it with English subtitles
>>216924035I agree. Older stuff can be cool, too but the quality isn't always great. As soon as you hit the 50's it drops in quality massively.
>>216924166This is a television and film board
>>216924193The quality is perfectly fine at least for non b movies
Popeye compilation 1933-1939https://archive.org/details/popeye-1933-1939
For the longest time I was under the impression that Stagecoach (1939) was the first real Western, at least since the Silent era. But that's just not the case. John Wayne was in plenty of good ones, especially The Big Trail. Serialized westerns from Hopalong Cassidy or Gene Autry were really good as well. Perhaps not as serious as John Ford and others took them, but still had all the typical qualities of a great Western with beautiful landscapes and heroic cowboys.
>>216924681>Hopalong Cassidy or Gene AutryI've heard of them but haven't watched anything with them What do you recommend
My personal favorite years of Jack Benny 1930s and pre WW2 https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Jack_Benny_Singles_1934-1935https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Jack_Benny_Singles_1935-1936https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Jack_Benny_Singles_1936-1937https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Jack_Benny_Singles_1937-1938https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Jack_Benny_Singles_1938-1939https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Jack_Benny_Singles_1939-1940https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Jack_Benny_Singles_1940-1941https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Jack_Benny_Singles_1941-1942That's not to say his entire radio program isn't great and worth the list because it is
>>216924909"Hopalong Cassidy Returns" or "Cassidy of Bar 20" are two of my favorites that are also good entry points. However, William Boyd made like 60 Hopalong Cassidy movies before the TV series even began, and many of them are similar. But the characters are easy to love and none of the movies are really chronological. Although you could watch the original "Hopalong Cassidy" film just to see how he got the nickname Hopalong.Gene Autry is mostly known for founding the Los Angeles Angels, but back in the day he was known as the "Singing Cowboy" and boy does he break into song in all of his movies! His films feel more dated but can be enjoyable if you're really into Westerns. "Bells of Capistrano" is the one I remember most.
>>216924681By the 60’s cowboy flicks were an old school genre, by at least 50 years.
>>216925400By the 1960s every genre was old school with exception of science fiction
>>216925179Gene Autry founded the MLB team LA Angeles?I'll be dipped that's pretty neat.Thank you for the recommendation anon I'll give them a watch

>>216926597That is sad. Rip horses. What exactly happened why did he fight Flynn over it??
>>216926644Errol Flynn was an accomplished horseman and thought it was animal cruelty.

>>216926723As it was. Don't know what kind of man you'd have to be not to care over something like that
>>216924035Depression movies were magical, 1939 output is well known. 40s is depressing noir + pre-war struggle WDYM?
>>216926344His PURSUED 1947 is great noir. VIsuals +++
>>216926733idk since technicolor predates both of those by like 20 years. they kept improving the process throughout the 20th century so even within any given year there's no telling which version of the it you're seeing
>>216924035This was the peak of the Hollywood Studio System so the stars' images were controlled in a way that would be hard in the 1950s and impossible now. It was the glamour era. Even the unattractive stars like Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart somehow were glamorous. And even the great movies barely pretended to have anything to do with real life, one of the most iconic movies of the era is about a Hollywood director who decides he's better off making glamorous escapism. There's something wonderful about the era because it's like looking at an alien planet where everything is beautiful and the entire terrain consists of Hollywood backlots.

>>216924035How did people pump out so much kino in the 1930s despite the huge depression going on?
>>216927367who knows..perhaps just better talent both acting and writing
>>216927367Movies were a relatively cheap form of entertainment at the time, so while it would be exaggerating to say the Depression benefited Hollywood, they did benefit from a huge influx of people from theatre and literature who needed the fat Hollywood paycheck. The stereotype of Hollywood films from this era is that people would stand in breadlines or whatever all day and then go to a movie and dream of a better life.

Never really watched any Renoir pictures from after he fled to Hollywood. Do you find them to be as good as his older movies and maybe have any recommendations?
>>216924193Really? 1960's in my favorite era for movies. I recommend you see Knife in The water the debut movie by Roman Polanski: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNFXtHv2R1M1 hour and 34 minutes of pure cinematic joy.

>>216924193>>216930969Many seem to dislike the 1950s, I've heard it called shallow, too safe and conservative. Can't say I do because I love the big budget epic extravaganza but yeah I've noticed more slop from the 50s than other old decades.
>>216931352The 50s was full of book and stage play demakes.

When you stop to think about it the 1930s-1940s weren't really that long ago

Yeah.
>>216931681Tarantino said the 1950s and 1980s were the two worst decades for Hollywood
>>216931827so what?
>>216931672this is true
>>216931352>Many seem to dislike the 1950s, I've heard it called shallow, too safe and conservative. That couldn't be further from the truth.
>>216931318I could be wrong but I feel like a big part of why only certain European movies are known in America is because back in the day only a few got subbed in English and they would be screened over and over again. >>216931352Myeah I feel like it got better later in the decade though. I hate to think of all the Hollywood movies that got ruined due to censorship laws and shithead studio heads. For me personally I can appreciate a good historical epic. (sort of funny how Romans are always played by Germanic looking actors lol) I also love me some Billy Wilder comedies, but they're nice regardless of the decade. If I had to pick a favorite American movie from the 50's I'd maybe say The Sweet Smell of Succes.>>216931665Np friend I just typed in in "La Grande Illusion full movie" in Yandex.ru (Started using this website after Google started removing all the pirated content. >>216931827>Tarantino saidgreat, we know its incorrect then
>>216932377lololol Quentin Tarantino is such an untalented shithead. The only guy I have ever met that called Quentin Tarantino a "Genius" Is a special ed retard junkie/alcoholic guy I went to high school with. For me Personally if I had to pick a "worst Hollywood decade" I'd say the current one, the last one and the 90's.
