There's something magical about these two decades. Theses are the only two decades I legitimately wish I could have met Hollywood actors and actresses. Please share/tv/ related material from the the decades listed above

La Grande Illusion (1937) is the greatest movie ever made and there are anons who will go their whole lives without watching it. Sad!
>>
The Depression and a world war? This is what you find magical?
>>
>>216924140
Where can I watch it with English subtitles
>>
>>216924035
I agree. Older stuff can be cool, too but the quality isn't always great. As soon as you hit the 50's it drops in quality massively.

For the longest time I was under the impression that Stagecoach (1939) was the first real Western, at least since the Silent era. But that's just not the case. John Wayne was in plenty of good ones, especially The Big Trail. Serialized westerns from Hopalong Cassidy or Gene Autry were really good as well. Perhaps not as serious as John Ford and others took them, but still had all the typical qualities of a great Western with beautiful landscapes and heroic cowboys.

>Hopalong Cassidy or Gene Autry
I've heard of them but haven't watched anything with them
What do you recommend

That's not to say his entire radio program isn't great and worth the list because it is

"Hopalong Cassidy Returns" or "Cassidy of Bar 20" are two of my favorites that are also good entry points. However, William Boyd made like 60 Hopalong Cassidy movies before the TV series even began, and many of them are similar. But the characters are easy to love and none of the movies are really chronological. Although you could watch the original "Hopalong Cassidy" film just to see how he got the nickname Hopalong.

Gene Autry is mostly known for founding the Los Angeles Angels, but back in the day he was known as the "Singing Cowboy" and boy does he break into song in all of his movies! His films feel more dated but can be enjoyable if you're really into Westerns. "Bells of Capistrano" is the one I remember most.
>>
>>216924681
By the 60’s cowboy flicks were an old school genre, by at least 50 years.
>>
>>216925400
By the 1960s every genre was old school with exception of science fiction
>>
>>216925179
Gene Autry founded the MLB team LA Angeles?
I'll be dipped that's pretty neat.
Thank you for the recommendation anon I'll give them a watch

This was the peak of the Hollywood Studio System so the stars' images were controlled in a way that would be hard in the 1950s and impossible now. It was the glamour era. Even the unattractive stars like Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart somehow were glamorous. And even the great movies barely pretended to have anything to do with real life, one of the most iconic movies of the era is about a Hollywood director who decides he's better off making glamorous escapism.

There's something wonderful about the era because it's like looking at an alien planet where everything is beautiful and the entire terrain consists of Hollywood backlots.

>>216927367
Movies were a relatively cheap form of entertainment at the time, so while it would be exaggerating to say the Depression benefited Hollywood, they did benefit from a huge influx of people from theatre and literature who needed the fat Hollywood paycheck.

The stereotype of Hollywood films from this era is that people would stand in breadlines or whatever all day and then go to a movie and dream of a better life.

If you download it use VLC to watch it and use the vlsub feature. You can also just search the movie title + eng sub on yandex.ru.

The quality is watchable but not amazing.

It is a great movie, I also really like Les Bas Fonds by Jean Renoir which I don't really see discussed much. Never really watched any Renoir pictures from after he fled to Hollywood. Do you find them to be as good as his older movies and maybe have any recommendations?

Really? 1960's in my favorite era for movies. I recommend you see Knife in The water the debut movie by Roman Polanski: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNFXtHv2R1M

Many seem to dislike the 1950s, I've heard it called shallow, too safe and conservative. Can't say I do because I love the big budget epic extravaganza but yeah I've noticed more slop from the 50s than other old decades.

I could be wrong but I feel like a big part of why only certain European movies are known in America is because back in the day only a few got subbed in English and they would be screened over and over again.
>>216931352
Myeah I feel like it got better later in the decade though. I hate to think of all the Hollywood movies that got ruined due to censorship laws and shithead studio heads.
For me personally I can appreciate a good historical epic. (sort of funny how Romans are always played by Germanic looking actors lol) I also love me some Billy Wilder comedies, but they're nice regardless of the decade. If I had to pick a favorite American movie from the 50's I'd maybe say The Sweet Smell of Succes.

lololol Quentin Tarantino is such an untalented shithead. The only guy I have ever met that called Quentin Tarantino a "Genius" Is a special ed retard junkie/alcoholic guy I went to high school with.
