Cameron can coast on the franchise's good grace because this whole character is terrible, and in this movie a lot of key moments hinges on him and the emotional investment we're supposed to have with him and his story. The actor is pretty bad and his dialogue is shit. Young men dont identify with a 16 years old that says "bro" every sentence. They want to be Goku, not Gohan. They want to see themselves as a stoic young man.

When Quaritch is trying to connect with him and mentions his mother who died fighting the Na’vi, he doesn’t care and never has any conflict over his place being of two worlds. Even manipulates his father into giving him those dog tags he uses to escape. People joke and call him a Na’viboo, but that’s so literally true that he doesn’t even see humans as his own people.
