Cagney WAS modernity though. Shouldn't have slapped him for that. Should've given him a 'hell yeh, brother!'. He's specifically referring to his performance in Public Enemy (1931). And it's so true. You watch it and just think, he's decades ahead of every other actor. His style is subtle and naturalistic in the way that would become normal in movies. While everyone else is still stiff and broad.
