Because it's not "renewable." The industrial waste and environmental impact from the creation of these, from dams to wind generators to solar panels, are far worse (somehow) than just mining coal, and a lot of it has to do with battery technology and transfer of energy. Lithium mining is insanely destructive, and the loss of energy during transportation from a renewable farm makes almost all of them non-viable. This is not to say the mining of coal is the solution - the solution is nuclear and always has been.
