The industrial waste and environmental impact from the creation of these, from dams to wind generators to solar panels, are far worse (somehow) than just mining coal, and a lot of it has to do with battery technology and transfer of energy. Lithium mining is insanely destructive, and the loss of energy during transportation from a renewable farm makes almost all of them non-viable. This is not to say the mining of coal is the solution - the solution is nuclear and always has been.
