You'd need a jury to convict, which requires unanimity, and given the extreme/contrived circumstances, this seems highly unlikely if it were an RL situation. The jury would just be happy that the world is rid of Doe, even if it happened on Doe's terms, exactly like he wanted.Mills gets booked, actually spends a few nights in a jail (quite possibly on suicide watch), and is treated very kindly by all involved. In the end, he did pop off and shoot the guy, so he is a danger to himself (and possibly others) in the immediate aftermath. The trial occurs, he's acquitted via any number of decent arguments ("I mean, C'mon" is a valid argument in this case), and he's given time served. But he never carries a badge ever again. He gets mental health support and so on.
