Last Jedi left a bad taste in everyone's mouth, and the kid that Spielberg found at a Bar Mitzvah can't act. The movie was watchable, but it needed a different lead. Lord and Miller's original vision was probably better than what we got.

Han is a roguish smuggler who runs in shady circles and isn't afraid to shoot first and ask questions later. That's it. That's already more than enough characterization to set Han up for his arc over the course of the three movies. We see this unscrupulous, money motivated criminal fall in love and turn into a selfless freedom fighter. That's his arc.(Also I refuse to watch anything with Donald Glover, ever. He's so fucking bad it's insane to me the career he's managed to have.)

It's an "origin story" set before its main character's actual origin story. Everything we need to learn about how Han Solo became Han Solo happens in A New Hope, so his prequel movie is just two hours of dicking around without even a chance of anything interesting happening to the character.
