We all agree this season is terrible, but I loved all 4 previous seasons, this was one of my favorite shows, even with all its glaring faults (constant expositions, flanderization of some characters, refusal to kill any main characters yet constantly put them in situations where they should at the very least be gravely injured, repeating almost the same pattern for every season, Vecna retcon), there was always room for some genuine moments between the characters and some incredible scenes, so it's shocking to me how bad this is. The only way this shitty season could be redeemed was if before Eleven's about to deliver the final blow, Vecna goes 'You can't do this, Jane! Because..." and they all break into a song and dance, including all the characters that died on previous seasons, one demo doing an elaborate breakdancing routine, the MF taking the shape of a guy doing some tapdancing, and Henry belting some serious operatic vocals. Maybe Mike dancing with Will to humor the seething fags. I'm not joking, this would cement it as the more KINO finale of all time. We see the gang as young teenager shenanigans, Steve and Robin stuff was good, the entire plot revolving around the Mindflayer was good stuff. The Russian crap though? All weak. Super weak. I find it fascinating how we've come full circle in the culture wars, where it's now become the popular thing on the internet, not just the chans, to openly mock and make fun of a gay character breaking down and coming out in front of his friends. But then again it's also the Duffers fault for being absolutely tone deaf about the implications of said coming-out, and how in general it can affect social dynamics within a tight-knit group. I can't recall if it was the third or fourth season when they started telegraphing him being gay, but there was some cool stuff there that could've been explored in different ways, like him panicking about it and being afraid that his friends would reject him for it. This could've been written into somekind of big showdown with Vecna, where he would out him in an attempt to turn them against eachother, but obviously the Duffers don't know how to write a decent arc for a gay teen in this day and age. Instead poor Will received magic powers and a heartfelt group hug.
I like how its back to being "science created the magic". S4 made it seem like whatshisface was a natural psychic and they developed the science-y shit from studying him. Overall I like the story of this season so far.I don't like how demogorgons are immune to bullets for some reason, even though you can harm them with sharp physical objects like nail-studded baseball bats or broken wine bottles.
