Finally revisited this flick after a quarter century and was just shocked how stupid and shallow the plot and characters are. My childhood memories were that this was supposed to be some great achievement in drama and boy was I wrong.Gotta admit the sinking itself was kino, it makes sense that's all I remembered from back then; but, even then, that dragged for too long, especially how they keep going to the boats and then going back into the sinking ship before ship finally goes down.
I too remember nothing except the actual sinking.
>>216947024Agree and disagree. Is it plausible that a girl would abandon her entire family and fiance for a literal hookup? No not plausible. But the way Jack and Rose communicated - the words and the silences - was very lifelike and well-done. I felt the tension as Jack saying "I want you. But I know you'd never come with me." And Rose saying "You're great, but I'd never go with you. Or maybe I would."It's the exact tension, in my own life, between myself and any girl I've ever approached. Sometimes the connection holds true. Sometimes it proves to just be flirtation. That was the interest in their relationship for me. The emotional climax for me was when Rose jumped off the lifeboat at the last minute and Jack saw her and they ran to find each other. He was crying and calling her stupid. It was incredibly done. It's sappy, I get it. But I like it too.
>>216947024(Cont.)Fully agree about the sinking being kino. They made the visuals effects *just* good enough to age well. So the wide shots of the boat tilted at fucking 45 degrees against the night sky look absolutely incredible today. And back in the day, I saw a behind the scenes show. The director actually flooded a set to simulate the flooded cabins and hallways. The actors were actually running around in a carefully crafted set. Such a great attention to detail. And the direction of the extras was top notch. 99% of the time, extras don't really matter. In Titanic, the extras really had emotional gravity. Their anger at the crew. Their posh insistence on first class treatment during a disaster. Their desperate flailing to escape however they can. It really drove home how fucked a situation it was.
>>216947248>>216947445I can't see it desu. Every character in this flick is so shallow it feels like a parody. The relationships between rose and jack and billy zane are particularly incomprehensible; jack had no reason to take sympathy to that petulant rich girl other than she looks like kate winslet; rose opening herself to some bum also lake no sense other than for dicaprio's looks; zane is just evil without personality or justification, he also invites the lower class guy for lunch when he didn't need to, and he and the family fail to notice rose is hanging out with the bum alone which is completely inappropriate.
>>216947024A lot of people share your thoughts and tear into Rose upon re-evaluation
The weird thing is rewatching titanic also took me back to when avatar was released, and as I watched it then I thought avatar looked nice but I couldn't believe the shallow writing came from the same guy who made titanic. Now I can correct the record and say avatar was exactly what I should be expecting.
>>216948305I legit didn't remember she was so unsympathetic, all this time I was thinking it was a /tv/ meme
>>216948020>jack had no reason to take sympathy to that petulant rich girl other than she looks like kate winsletInteresting you noticed this too. Kate and Leo were both attractive. I've read how romances often cast a more average girl with a really handsome guy. So women viewers can self-insert. But both of them were attractive.Jack's attraction to Rose was her "difficulty." Some guys DO like a challenge. Not being abused by Rose, but the idea she doesn't let just any guy in. She's like a puzzle that can be solved. I personally don't like that though. I can't relate to that mindset of playing courting games. I like a girl who gets to know me and moves into a relationship with me with zero ambiguity or drama. But I've had male friends who like fighting over girls, doing long favors for girls, etc. I don't get it.>Rose opening herself to some bum also lake no sense other than for dicaprio's looksIt was implied Rose's family had lost money. So maybe Rose had lost the illusion that money is forever and solves everything. But if her family was rich and doing fine, I'd definitely see your point. Plus Jack wasn't a random boorish man. He had cultivated talent. He had charm and social grace. These are things women like because it shows a yearning to be a deeper human being. Again, if he was a rude guy, who just drank all day, and yelled at her "oi, rich wench" - yeah I could see why it'd be ridiculous for her to like him.>zane is just evil without personality or justificationOk. I agree here. Zane is one-dimensional to the point of comedy. Every scene. He is scowling and being an asshole. I think the director wanted him to be comically evil. It worked. I laughed out loud so many times. I've never met a real person who acts like that.
>>216948647>>216948020(Cont.)>he also invites the lower class guy for lunch when he didn't need toThis is totally accurate. Well-off people - not even rich but in a nice suburb - sometimes take "less fortunate people" under their wing. An ex was in foster care as a kid and had extreme family problems. She was chosen to babysit for this wealthy couple and their 5 kids. I asked her a few times if the father ever tried it on her. She always said no. He's a devout man. Their only requirement was that she go to church with them. They paid her like a full time job and even bought her a modest car. They could've chosen any of the well-off girls from their church. But they found my ex from her babysitting job profile and kept her for like 5 years. I know a different family that let a high school athlete live with them because he was having issues at home. I know yet a different family that had 6 biological kids, then adopted two additional kids, one of which was a different race. Last example, in college, I was lab partners with this rich fraternity guy. He was always nice to me and invited me to parties. I went to one and he was cool as shit. He introduced me and helped me get a beer. He passed me a blunt a bunch of dudes were burning. He treated me like a best friend. He didn't cheat off me. He didn't make fun of me. He didn't dump pig's blood on me (lol). He was just very generous. I grew up lower middle class, so it's strange to me. But I definitely see it's a real thing.>and he and the family fail to notice rose is hanging out with the bum alone which is completely inappropriate.I agree with this too. Jack could've been any fucking body. It was insane. My only explanation is Cal knew Rose's rebellion and wanted to indulge her a bit. I suspect he even knew they might have sex. He was such a scumbag I felt like he would definitely cheat on Rose. But I think adding that to the film would've made it seem infidelity was the reason Rose chose Jack, not true love.
