This created a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) like most big entertainment offerings, you want to be in the in-group to find connections with people. You want your favourites, your theories, you want to see where it goes.Entertainment now isn't this movie vs that movie, it's the battle for attention spans, pulling us in a thousand different directions (streaming to social media to video games) and people are so desperate for a shared culture that connecting over some superheroes was enough for them.
