Kylo Ren capturing Poe would've been Darth Talon capturing Ben. Killing Han would be the moment he turned to the Dark Side, making it much more impactful. Especially since Rey being Kira Solo wouldn't be a mystery box in this situation, so it'd be a sister watching her brother kill their father.

There’s this stupid fucking scene I never can get over. Rey and Dey Fly-Nao are sinking into the sand and think they’re about to die, and Dey starts screaming “Rey! REYYYY! I never told you!!!”And then they don’t die and Rey asks Dey what he wanted to tell her, and he just says “Oh nothing”. And it isn’t brought up for the rest of the movie.Now the natural assumption is that it’s a love confession. What other conclusion is there for a guy and a girl who have been together for three movies? Despite of course, that Dey Fly-Nao was relegated to a fat Asian woman as a consolation prize last movie. And Rey is shown to be romantically involved with Space Hitler 2.So you’re just left with this weird scene where the guy who has been relegated to a sidekick role with an ugly sidekick fatso as a love interest is just confessing his love to a woman who doesn’t like him.And then after the fact they came up with some bullshit excuse like his dying words were “Rey I wanted to tell you I’m force sensitive!”Which also is crazy to do. Even if it wasn’t out of place, why tell her while dying? And then why not bring it up later? It just reeks of the insane thought that they’d have another trilogy being pumped out right after this.

They wanted him to be le heckin' 100% good boy magical negro so they made him a former stormtrooper only in the sense that he wore a uniform for a minute before taking it off and aside from that had no actual backstory. Which, as many have pointed out, makes the whole thing completely pointless because the fact that he used to be with the empire is just a plot point and there's nothing to actually build off. But that's what happens when your make characters that exist to be extensions of your politics and don't serve any real narrative purpose.

It's not clear if Finn was supposed to be a love interest or Rose was supposed to matter at all or if Snoke was supposed to do anything besides die or if Rey was always secretly a daughter of a force user because the people in charge didn't even know themselves sometimes. The answer depended on who you askedThis is where the absence of someone like Lucas is so problematic. Because even if he wasn't the director he made sure the train stayed on the tracks. Lucas pulled some shit out of his ass in his films, too but nothing that ever felt completely incongruous with the previous work. It was all pulling in the same direction. Kathleen Kennedy just made sure the force was female and then let whatever happen because she never had any creative vision keep consistent. She was making the movies just to make movies and has never understood what fans liked or wanted because to her the movies were just a means to an end.
