very rarely do I watch a classic movie and it lives up totally to the hype. in fact, I think It's a Wonderful Life has exceeded the hype. this is hands-down the best christmas movie ever made, and surely one of the best movies ever made period. whenever it ends I just want to start from the beginning again, like music that improves with familiarity.
>>216970235George Bailey was a pushover and a sucker. He gave up a good life to have a wife he didn’t want, a job he didn’t ask for, tormented by a fat old pig, and stuck with an ungrateful idiot of an uncle. It’s a warning against letting the world roll over you. It’s suicide fuel.
>Christmas movie????other than the last 5 minutes it has nothing to do with Christmas. Even the Die Hard nonces have a stronger case
>>216970265Having a dual meaning like that just makes it even better.
>>216970269hot take but I think that, for the very best Christmas movies, Christmas is almost an afterthought, the background setting to messages that resonates at all times of year. this is true for It's a Wonderful Life, it's true for Home Alone, and it's true for the Holdovers
>>216970265>George Bailey was a pushover and a sucker. He gave up a good life to have a wife he didn’t want, a job he didn’t ask for, tormented by a fat old pig, and stuck with an ungrateful idiot of an uncle. It’s a warning against letting the world roll over you. It’s suicide fuel.
>>216970405The Family Man did it better.
>>216970235The movie is more relevant when you realize Frank Capra did the movie and him and Stewart to help with their PTSD. It was both their first movies after coming back from the war
mogged
>>216970569>mfw little johnny pops his christmas cracker at the table and you flashback to napalming frankfurt
>>216970235It was made in bad conditions too, IIRC, so the results are by a collective labor of love than just pumping out studio product.
>>216970235Also Jimmy Stewart was at his still youthful peak of 1 foot firmly planted in normie life, the other foot itching to just lose it all. That potential for DOUBLE consciousness of opposing thoughts is rare to achieve. Even Falling Down, American Beauty + Fight Club were zombied wagie existence, but Bailey has a full, vital family life.
george should have married them both desu, he even talks about having a harem in this scene
>>216970269>>216970328Rocky is a Christmas movie
>>216970265He stepped up when he had to in order to prevent his home from becoming a shithole owned by a fat cat Jew. The world is what it is today because the subsequent generation did what you suggest George should have gone. They used their money and chose to do nice holidays and insisted on their freedom while they let their own parents legacy rot or be bought up whole.
>>216972188he could’ve just shot mr. potter
>>216970405They used his likeness to make a villain in the underdog cartoon.https://youtu.be/lPimi4Mjdr8
>>216970265One thing that occurs to me is that his friends pitching in to save his credit union just reset things to the status quo. He's still going to be fighting uphill. Potter is still going to be devising schemes and trying to take over. What happens if the uncle loses another deposit? >>216971907Violet was clearly the better choice of wife. She would have worn a diaphragm for a few years, traveled with him, and encouraged him to invest in his friend's plastic business. Then they could have come back to Bedford Falls with a bunch of cash and outbid Potter on real estate. Mary just wanted to babytrap him ASAP so he couldn't leave town.
>>216973785That was exactly my point. George is still left with everyone dragging him down. It’s like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Jimmy Stewart plays losers with good hearts. The losers get “consolations” and evil prevails. Seriously, what the fuck?
>>216970265>a wife he didn’t wantWhat?
>>216970235>didn't see it's a wonderful life until just now>still feels qualified to proclaim it the best whatevergrim
His voice is really cool. I miss when actors had cool accents.
>>216974135what the hell is your point here? Do you think that someone needs to think about a movie for years in order to be qualified to provide their opinion on it?
>>216972972Thats not a bad idea. What happens when Potter dies? He has no family or friends. Does the government just take/liquidate his assets and now theres no one left trying to fuck over everyone in Bedford? Theres no way he left them to anybody in his will
>itt a bunch of idiots who think they're totally actually going to do all those big grand plans they want to do and don't realize george was about to kill himself over an imagined life he was never going to live anyway
>>216970235>made back when prop snow was made of shredded asbestos>lived to 89what did he mean by this?
>>216974322Not me. I’m going to succeed.
>life is good as long as you're handsome and naturally charismatic so people like youwhat am i supposed to take away from this?
>>216974348Nm it's just foamite not asbestos. Apparently asbestos was a wartime strategic asset or something so they used something else.
>>216974495Give up
