Plausibility, myth can't be a catch all excuse. Why even do it as war genre instead of black/sex comedy?
>>
>>216971694
It's plausibility vs possibility, if you don't understand that yet you never will
Things that aren't possible are cool because they're not possible, there's no switch of incongruence in your head
Things that are implausible and not cool, like nigs in settings they do not belong in, carries none of the fantastical aspect of impossibility, it simply flicks the switch.
And no, niggers do not entertain me.

Shit argument. It's like if I argued that Tony Stark's wardrobe doesn't matter when he's not Iron Man because the MCU has fantastical elements.
>So what if Kevin Feige dressed him up like Ulysses S Grant! Why shouldn't he have a pocket watch?! It's FANTASY!
Like others have said, it's set in a real time period with the goal of entertaining real people who related to Odysseus. Tony Stark dressing like a rich guy from the mid 2000s makes sense.
I would go on but I don't want to keep repeating myself.
>>

Although Homer's works contain mythological elements, they are set in a time and place for which we have archeological evidence of the people, the cultures and the broad historical context.
You might as well argue that the Kansans in the Wizard of Oz could be Chinese because the story is a fantasy.

>>
>>216971694

>>
>>216971694
Laziest journalism. False equation.

Example A: A story like Stranger Things set in our world in the 80s, with spooky elements. The culture of the era was known to all, but the spooky elements are something that wouldn't be known to most of the population living at the time if they had happened. So one could suspend disbelief re: demogorgons, but older viewers will notice and complain when it's not authentic to the 80s time period. Because that is a "known".

Example B: A movie about Barack Obama, but they cast a pale asian guy to play him. Not believable, takes you out, because Obama is a real known person and a known reality is being misrepresented.

So, many people won't care if The Odyssey is inaccurate but it's logical for people who know better to be taken out of the movie, because sure it's entertainment, but it's entertainment that is misrepresenting a real thing.

Yes. They built an early settlement on Egypts north shore and sent their scholars to study in Egyptian schools, studying politics, law, culture, arts, math & building. Most of the Greek gods were derived from Egyptian gods, feminized from the Egyptian male versions. Greeks sought to build their own great city state, they expressly prohibited the excchange of Egyptian scholars coming north and studying in their own schools. They loved the organization and the law, architecture and art, but wanted to avoid intermixing their own with Egypts. Egypt wanted to increasingly make Greek cities Egyptian territories, but the Greeks refused. Then the Macedonians conquered them, then the Romans destroyed them, then the Turks replaced them.
You should read history sometime. It's real neat.

Inglorious Bastards is neither a historically accurate movie nor does it depict real events. But what would your reaction be if the Nazis ran around with Kevlar Vests, modern FAST Helmets and shoot with M4 assault rifles?
That's what the Odyssey is. It is not about historical accurary, most critics just fail at properly articulating what everyone is thinking: It completely misses the aesthetics of the time period.

once again,
Nolan and his gay agenda will perverse a great story about recapturing your soul from want. We can deduce by bringing the armor and characters closer to marvel then gladiator 2000 we can expect quips over dialouge and most certainly a very gay time battle inserted. Despite The Odyssey, being a perfect story, is quite ironic, there is no soul in this design, just super hero adjacent, and its about a story of the greatest beauty on earth (one's soul)
>>
NOOOO THE HECKIN NOLANERINO DOESNT DO MISTAKES YOU CANT SAY IT LOOKS LIKE SHTI YOU CAAAAANT
>>
>>216984943
Learn to fucking read, you dense nigger. I haven't stated historical accuracry is the crux of historical and mythological fictio, in fact I did the complete opposite. Inglorious Bastards does quite many mistakes regarding props. My point was that a fictional event is not an excuse to disregard about the setting entirely and put stuff in there which feels out of place even to someone whose knowledge of WW2 only stems from Call of Duty games.

Aesthetics, visuals and setdressing are important, that's why we make and watch movies about historical events regardless of how historically they are. To give the audience a perspective on a different world they are unfamiliar with, generally as a form of escapism. If the setting was irrelevant, the entire point of making a historical (or in Odyssey's case mythological) movie goes out the window.
>>
>>216971694
But Nolan has always been about the illusion of realism.
So this director can make a big stink about trying to take a completely fictional person and story like Batman and "make it real", but we're supposed to ignore this tendency when he is doing a story based on real people and a real event?

No, Homer tells the story of an epic that happened in the distant past. He was, supposedly, relating the feats that the ancestors of the kings he was talking to did during the war. There are several instances in which Homer claims that the heroes from the past were much stronger, braver and more virtuous than the men of his day
>>
>>216986697
Homers Illiad is a retelling of some ancient conflict of Doric ancestors in the Far North near the Polish-German border (that had numerous guys "weirdly" grouped with Italians and Meds - but it is other way around). Then the myth got transplanted on a new ground where they settled. Thus eg. snow, deep-black sea and other telling signs it is not Greeks vs "Troyans" (Troy wasnt identified with Hisarlik) but some kind of Proto-Slav or rather Pre-Slavic Veneds dishing it out with some other kind of Pre-something. There surely was some kind of North->South migration event and that is not the first piece of ancient scrap pointing towards it.

>>
The most accurate translations are even stupider: The Trojans destroy a section of the wall to fit the horse inside. It did not go through the gate.
>>
>>216987219
Complete bullshit. There's no snow in the Iliad and he constantly mentions the agean sea and the Greek islands surrounding Troy.
>>
>>216987390
Numerous times.
Have some, Book XII:
"So their cries urged on the Achaeans' war-lust.
Thick-and-fast as the snows that fall on a winter dawn
when Zeus who rules the world brings on a blizzard,
displaying to all mankind his weaponry of war . . .
and he puts the winds to sleep, drifting on and on
until he has shrouded over the mountains' looming peaks
and the headlands jutting sharp, the lowlands deep in grass
and the rich plowed work of farming men, and the drifts fall
on the gray salt surf and the harbors and down along the beaches
and only breakers beating against the drifts can hold them off
but all else on the earth they cover over, snows from the sky
when Zeus comes storming down—now so thick-and-fast
they volleyed rocks from both sides, some at the Trojans,
some from Trojans against the Argives, salvos landing,
the whole long rampart thundering under blows."

As for examples of naming things 1:1 when migrating: literally the whole New World. Those numerous Lincolns, Londons, Thames-es, Plymouths, Yorks, Guadalajaras, and other Baltimores copy-pasted willy nilly.

The "mythical" elements like the Gods are drab mystery meat-of-the-month.

I mean The Immortals goes to far the other way, and it wasn't good, but it wasn't boring either. And like Titanic, this story (and genre) has been done many many times. What's the point if you aren't going to knock people's socks off with fantastic-looking elements?

Well clearly not, or they'd stop casting ugly people. We went from Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom and Diane Kruger to whatever the creatures in Nolan's new flock are. I dont wanna watch ugly people. Adapting an ancient myth requires a framing device, and in fact, many ancient myths included one (in the case of the Indian Mahabharata, several) so that there was some anchor point for stories that were developed over centuries by generations of bards and poets over hundreds of tribes and villages. A modern adaptation of an ancient myth should keep at least one level of the framing device in place - say, a specific retelling from the Iron Age, so that (even though the Odyssey is ostensibly set in the Bronze Age) the historical inaccuracies can at least be attributed to the expectations and biases from the audiences at the anchor point.
>>
in my experience black people did not read the odyssey and don't give a fuck about myths because they can't even imagine not having breakfast so attempting to appeal to them seems like a losing strategy unless this is a producers situation where they are TRYING to lose money on it for tax write offs or whatever

Left:
clearly machine-stitched synthetic cloth in a drab color no one of important would wear around, in battle or otherwiser
Injection molded plastic helmet with faux-leather trim, also clearly machine stitched.

Right:
thoroughly archaic, so out of time that it looks practically alien.
Metalwork is clearly done in some primitive ancient era
Colorful and embellished enough to let you know that the guy sporting this was wealthy.
>>
>>216981047
Left just looks like safe generic slop, it's not memorable and you probably wouldn't be able to pick it out as something that was used in this movie. Right is unique looking and stands out, so it seems riskier to use as people are use to seeing something like that, so they just go with the muted colors and generic helm and leather as it's probably a lot cheaper too.

Holy shit are you being dumb on purpose? Anon isn’t saying he wants historical accuracy. He’s saying the movie Nolan made looks like dogshit. Every shot of the trailer is like an edgy 80s dark fantasy AI video, especially the Agamemnon “slow forward while he turns around” bit.

The movie looks bad. That’s the complaint. It looks shitty and bad and the costumes, colors and set-pieces are drab. None of the actors fit their parts and everything shown feels like he’s going, “hey check it out it’s the Odyssey” instead of, “holy shit those dragon teeth came alive.” The entire movie is lore-bait but somehow made for faggots.

C’mon, misread what I said. I dare you. Say I’m still bitching about historical accuracy.

Yeah, that guy reads as an ESFJ, SD-SF (Nurturer Temple) to me.

Why ESFJ (Fe–Si axis)
• Fe hero: everything he says is framed as “normal people just enjoy things”, “you’re politically invested”, “laughable loser”. He isn’t actually arguing the point, he’s policing what’s socially acceptable to feel about the movie and trying to shame you back into the herd. Classic Fe moral posturing.
• Si parent: he leans on precedent to excuse this casting – “Nolan has always blind-cast popular celebs,” “he’s never given a fuck,” “this is just how movies are.” That’s Si: appeal to past patterns and “this is the way it’s always been” as justification.
• Ne child: he projects motives onto you (“brain worms,” “obsessed,” “politically invested”) instead of arguing specifics. Ne child gets anxious about alternative interpretations, so it reduces everything to “you’re crazy / overthinking it.”
• Ti inferior: when pressed on logic (why is this case different?), he short-circuits into insults and hand-waving rather than tightening his reasoning.

Why SD-SF:
• SD (Structure-Focused): he reflexively defends big-studio norms and current-year hiring practices as “just how the system works,” and frames resistance as a personal pathology. That’s structure-loyal, not ideals-driven.
• SF: feelings and social harmony > principles. He isn’t defending a coherent aesthetic standard, he’s defending people being allowed to “just enjoy things” and his own comfort.

So yeah: ESFJ SD-SF reddit-lib media hall monitor.

It's incredible that you believe this, and aren't just trolling for lulz.

Hyper-focused on social reputation and shame (“loser,” “normal people”), crusading for the culturally “approved” stance while projecting her own insecurity about status. Very SF-social-credit energy.
Now I’m going to start guessing what you look like
Fat with glasses?

Mythology doesn't explain why their gear is from 700 years in the future from the fall of Troy.

If the movies goal is to entertain the fucking costumes should be entertaining too. Not look like they were 3d printed in someones basement

Doesn’t matter
They used race swap casting which makes any aesthetic criticism now instantly suspect and invalid due to the boyega principle

boyega principle = when studios turn casting into a political tripwire so you can’t criticize the movie without walking into a racism trap

short version you can paste:

the boyega principle is when a studio makes a really conspicuous race-coded casting choice in a legacy ip, not to serve the story, but to serve marketing and armor
the role is picked so that any complaint can be reframed as “you just hate [x] people” instead of “the writing / tone / direction sucks”
it moves the argument from “is this good?” to “are you a bigot?”

how it works:
• take a famous property with built-in fan expectations
• drop in a “statement” casting choice that will obviously change the vibe (or clash with the setting)
• spend the promo cycle hinting that pushback = prejudice
• media runs cover: every bad review is “toxic fans,” every concern is “racist backlash”
• result: quality is off limits, you are forced to defend yourself instead of critique the film

named after how disney used boyega’s casting in star wars as a moral shield: any criticism of the direction, tone, or character handling could be smeared as “angry racists mad a stormtrooper is black” rather than “this trilogy is creatively bankrupt.”

boyega is different because star wars can presumably be anything, being based in a different galaxy. am i wrong?
>>
>>216996954
It’s not different because we had lando and mace windu who were well made cool characters who because fan favorites
Finns character is objectively badly written and any criticism was instantly dismissed as racism which makes no sense any way you look at it
