This dude also just can't live up to Oenomaus. He's one of the better actors in HoA but he's nowhere near as convincingly physical in action scenes. One of the big things with Spartacus' action scenes has always been the movement, you saw that in the 2v2 and the climax fight last episode, and this guy just cannot move like that so all his fights are stilted and just portray him as having this raw power the people he fights can't stop. Which isn't very convincing when we had dudes like Theokoles before.

There's not enough interplay with other characters either. So like this guy interacting with Ashur is one of the only major sources of character drama, alongside Ashur interacting with the patrician guy, but it does not feel nearly as fleshed out as the original series. It is getting better expanding the cast with more episodes but they needed to start things off with more going on.

in Spartacus, you really got the sense that he was coming into an already established group of characters who all had their own goals and motivations and knew each other, and he immediately ran up against Crixus, Gnaeus, and others while befriending Varro who was also quite a standout character

Achillia just has the one weak little short guy who keeps hating on her, while his father of all people lectures him on why girls are awesome and his son should totally love Achillia and bow down to her
that kid's no rival, he's no antagonist, the show itself makes him a joke
and none of the other gladiators are anything more than "generic gladiator man". Doctore just instantly likes her after she manages to give him a tiny scratch, enough to pledge his life to protect her, and the Dad of the other guy just automatically loves her too

this is a common problem with modern female main characters - their struggle is never about actually learning and improving and ascending within a given framework - it's always instead about "you're already perfect kween you just have to show everybody and have them acknowledge the greatness that's already there"

By Episode 5 of the original series we'd already well established Crixus vs Spartacus' rivalry, several levels of intrigue with Spartacus scheming his way into the primus, his deal with Batiatus to find his wife, and the looming fight with Theokeles

we're really dragging with this story, and Achillia is just not compelling. What is she fighting for? What does she actually care about? We don't know.

Then sometime in the 90's, wrestling changed to where instead of wrestlers wrestling, everybody was just talking on the microphone, doing crowdwork, standing around talking about their emotions or their personality or gossiping about shit that had nothing to do with wrestling, like who was kissing who or which character had a miscarriage, or who was secretly gay, and then when one dude would stop talking, another dude would be somewhere else with a microphone and HE would start talking, and before you knew it, the whole 3 hour show was over and there wasn't a single wrestling match, just talking into microphones.

Some people must have really got off on that idea, and they must have all become Hollywood writers, because that's all that happens now in Hollywood shows, guys just standing around talking about bullshit. Everybody talks, talks, talks, and nobody does anything.
