Instead he blabbed and got Murder 1. First degree homicide is often hard to prove, so many times even in cases where it's obvious they plead down to 2nd degree homicide.

When you're caught and charged, it's supposed to be a negotiation phase of the case. You don't do the state's job for them by solving the crime. You let them prove what they can. If you are sincere about a mistake and want to do better, it makes no sense to spend 60 years in prison and never getting out.
