Sometimes Hollywood will become aware of some of the tropes/myths that become common knowledge and avoid putting them in future movies to avoid annoying the viewer, yet this one persists to this day. "you have the right to remain silent, right to an attorney," etc. They're not required to make an arrest but to have answers they give during an interview be admissible in court. If they confess and you've failed to give a Miranda warning then you can't use that confession but that's really all it matters for. And it only applies if you've been arrested/detained, if you confess to a cop before that happens you can't claim you weren't read your rights to make the confession disappear.
