Sometimes the public/jury just want the perpetrator to pay for the crime, and they don't give a fuck how crazy they actually are. I practice this kind of medicine and over the years I've met a lot of people who have gotten off of crimes "NGRI." Even murders. Or they just end up spending a few years in a state hospital, which is basically getting away with it. It's definitely not applied evenly or fairly. In high profile cases it never seems to work.
