My main issue from what I've seen so far is he never decided whether he wanted to go fully grounded and realistic, which would have been fine, or full on stylized fantasy, which also would have been fine. Instead we get a bland "worst of both worlds" compromise. I'll reserve judgement until I've seen it but every image I've seen so far leads me to believe this movie has no identity at all.

Nolan is putting his own stamp on it and going full fantasy. I don't see an issue with it. If you want historical armour, then you should also want the characters to be speaking ancient Homeric Greek and played by actors who are part of a long extinct race. Don't be silly people.

It’s the boyega principle
Using politically correct and anachronistic casting he casts a spell over the mediocre aspects of the production

>boyega principle = when studios turn casting into a political tripwire so you can’t criticize the movie without walking into a racism trap

short version you can paste:

>the boyega principle is when a studio makes a really conspicuous race-coded casting choice in a legacy ip, not to serve the story, but to serve marketing and armor
>the role is picked so that any complaint can be reframed as “you just hate [x] people” instead of “the writing / tone / direction sucks”
>it moves the argument from “is this good?” to “are you a bigot?”

how it works:
>take a famous property with built-in fan expectations
>drop in a “statement” casting choice that will obviously change the vibe (or clash with the setting)
>spend the promo cycle hinting that pushback = prejudice
>media runs cover: every bad review is “toxic fans,” every concern is “racist backlash”
>result: quality is off limits, you are forced to defend yourself instead of critique the film

named after how disney used boyega’s casting in star wars as a moral shield: any criticism of the direction, tone, or character handling could be smeared as “angry racists mad a stormtrooper is black” rather than “this trilogy is creatively bankrupt.”
>>
>>217001681

>people expecting visual creativity from Nolan, the guy that made a movie about going into people’s dreams and created the most boring dreams imaginable
People shouldn’t be surprised about this. Nolan doesn’t give a fuck about interesting aesthetics and always creates the most barebones, least visually interesting version of things he can make. When it’s something more grounded in reality like Oppenheimer, it works out. When there is any fantasy element, it fails.

Look at how this retard spends the insanely huge budget. Doesn't give a fuck at all does he. At this point I assume it's deliberately to piss ppl off. like with the Lord of Dem Rangz series, it is solely to spit in the face Tolkien, Tolkien fans, and ppl with good taste.

It's not simply about being historically accurate. Everyone acknowledges this is a fictional story. But historical armour pieces just fucking look good, they're often ready to go for mass rentals for movie productions, and you've already got a solid design to replicate if you need a decent baseline for your own costumes.
Like what is it with western creators absolutely hating historical armour? They always think historical pieces are too boring and they want to put their own gay twist on it. It ALWAYS looks like shit, too, it's incredible. It's a massive fucking waste of money to make something that looks like absolute dogshit.

Nothing is going to happen

It's been 20 years of Nolan showcasing his fraudulence to the world and everyone is still enraptured every time he makes a movie. It makes no difference whether The Odyssey is getting some negative buzz on 4chan and Xitter. It's going to come out in 7 months, everyone will adore it, it'll win a bunch of Oscars and the critics will call Nolan a genius again. It happens every single time.

It's possible that they're concerned about fatigue because that armor became so ubiquitous, such that it can be rented as you said. Earlier somebody referenced Troy stumbling financially because of "epic fatigue", a valid point, because I was there and I was fatigued. There is merit to stylization, to create something new and interesting. And having read Odyssey, it's more biblical/mystical than it is historically accurate, so there is plenty of room for interpretation.

Nolan is one of the few directors who I'd think *might* make alterations for the sake of improving the product, not as a weird political statement. I just watched the trailer and didn't see any niggers, so maybe he's still got integrity.

>Set design: theme park antiquity
The columns are oversized, clean, modular. The stairs look like abstract ramps. The bronze horse reads like a Vegas casino centerpiece, not a religious object. It isn’t Mycenaean space meant to compress bodies and signal hierarchy. It’s museum-core built for IMAX walkways and insurance-safe choreography.

>Staging: corporate ritual
The crowd is evenly spaced, all facing one way, arms up like a stadium wave. No social strata, guards, slaves, filth, animals, or power layers. It isn’t a mob or a cult. It’s a Marvel premiere audience cosplaying as peasants.

>Camera: tourism god mode
High, wide, detached, unobstructed. No occlusion, no bodies crossing lens. It’s drone-eye meant for thumbnails, not human POV. The Odyssey is disorienting and cruel. This is spectator seating.

>Tone mismatch
Homer is claustrophobic, dirty, superstitious, unfair. Gods whisper in dirt and dreams. This shot is bright, clean, brand-safe, instagrammable. Myth without dread.

>Commercial intent
Trailers need a frame that screams EPIC in 0.8 seconds. IMAX wants skyline scale. Global markets need instantly legible fantasy language. So the set exists to say: “ancient times happened here, please clap.”

>Why it feels fake
It’s not a mythic civilization. It’s a luxury mall cosplaying as Homer. Odysseus looks like he could buy a latte off-screen. The craft isn’t bad — the anthropology is.

Only the temple is a set. The rest is an actual location Aït Benhaddou that is neither brutalist nor minimalist.
> No social strata, guards, slaves, filth, animals, or power layers. It isn’t a mob or a cult.
In exactly another shot the guards are seen holding a mob of people in line.
>Gods whisper in dirt and dreams. This shot is bright, clean, brand-safe, instagrammable.
And in the shot of the soldiers inside the horse they're cramped, sweaty, dirty with some of them even partially drowning. We literally see the undead coming from inside the dirt in another shot.
>Conclusion

>>
>>217007834
Lmao. Way to go.
>>
>>217007834
You’re arguing facts. The critique was about function.

Yes, Ait Benhaddou is real. Yes, other shots have guards, sweat, dirt, undead, cramped soldiers. None of that changes what this flagship image is doing.

Trailers don’t average a film. They establish a baseline ontology. This frame is the baseline.

Look at what it communicates:

• the temple dominates with impossible clean geometry
• the plaza is flattened into a civic stage
• the horse is framed as a heroic sculpture, not a threat
• bodies are spaced for skyline readability
• no enforced compression, no choke points, no visible exclusion zones
• crowd arranged for spectacle, not terror

That’s not “Benhaddou being Benhaddou.” That’s a real location being lit, graded, and blocked into a marketing tableau.

Saying “but later there are guards and dirt” misses the point. If your defining image reads as:

grand civic event with moral consensus crowd

then every grim insert has to fight upstream against that meaning.

That’s why one shot matters. It isn’t a nitpick — it’s semiotics. This is the Trojan Horse. It should feel like the city is swallowing something it doesn’t understand. Instead it looks like a rally venue unveiling a public art piece.

And no, a mob being corralled in a different shot doesn’t fix the absence of power geometry here. This plaza doesn’t encode hierarchy. It encodes legibility.

This isn’t about “accuracy.” It’s about anthropological imagination. A civilization is not defined by whether there exists some dirt in the edit. It’s defined by what the studio chooses as its emblem.

That emblem says: prestige spectacle, not mythic dread.
>>
>>217007900
>They establish a baseline ontology. This frame is the baseline.
This is not from the trailer. It is from the IMAX prologue released in theaters(so not a shot that's meant to be a showcase/representative for the entire film) and I can tell for a fact that this shot won't be the representative of the film because most of it is shot on real locations, forts, etc...
>>
>>217001681

Art-designers trying to re-invent armor and weapons without understanding or knowing about actual real gear is always hilarious. We have literal thousands of years of armor history made by people killing each other, perfecting this over the centuries, and then some are hoe goes "um I can actually do better, chud!" and fumbles that shit every time.

>>
>>217003418
This is true. The Most Holy Trinosophia (written by Freemasons) revealed that the Freemasons deliberately orchestrated things since at least the mid-1800s. Le Comte de St Germain was some engima Hermeticist bullshitter who trolled his way into their courts and played a double agent for like five countries at the same time. He baited them with a fake potion of immortality and never told them how to make it, just to fuck with them even more. He assisted them in orchestrating the French Revolution, which led to his arrest and presumed death. The last surviving thing of his was The Holy Trinosophia, which was a letter he wrote to someone while in the French prisons. It detailed a bunch of philosophical symbolism, and was only transcribed by some Ascended Master from the Great White Brotherhood aka The Invisible Brotherhood of Christ. This sounds ludicrous, I know, and wikijews claim it's a hoax. But the Freemasons swear the truth of this up and down, despite the fact that it is horribly disparaging for them.

>>217010008
>Dionysus
It's a toss up, ancient Egypt lasted long enough to have archeologists dedicated to studying "Ancient Egypt" in their time and Innana had a temple at the city of Uruk known then as Eanna. That's pretty fucking old because both Athena and Dionysus are pre-Egyptian transplants.
>>
>>217003418
>>217010105
Anyways I forgot to say the point. Talk about burying the lede. What I forgot to conclude, was that is also historical fact that they also had their hands in orchestrating the assassination of Franz Ferdinand II. As well, the Norman Dodd Report to the Comittee on Foundations (1954? 56? something around there) confirmed Fraternal societies and "charitable" foundations are typically lead by groups attempting to orchestrate and consolidate power through seemingly philanthropic business practices (ala Freemasonry, the Carnegies, etc.). Did you know it's illegal to claim to be a fraternal member? Weird. I don't remember a branch of government specifically being designated for faggots who peddle buildings older than modern society itself as their own. There are many strange things about the habits of these jew golem.

It already looks gay and retarded. I could genuinely ask any random gay black retard with Down's Syndrome and a coupon book for Hobby Lobby to make me historically accurate costumes for an adaptation of the Odyssey, and it would still look better than those fucking costumes. Those are cheap, colorless, bland, and lacking culture. They lack any sense of style or purpose, outside of servicing as vague silhouettes for a scene. How much did this movie cost? It looks like he went into the fucking desert and shot some scenes with Spirit Halloween suits, but only after he was allowed to paint them all grey and black. GET IT? LIKE BATMAN, except the suits have zero detail, and inspire disinterest in audiences.
>>
>>217010233
Inanna is literally the Sumerian name for the goddess who is known as Ishtar in Akkadian mythology, the concept of Athena directly comes from that goddess through cultural exchange in Mesopotamia of antiquity. Ishtar is also linked with Isis as a concept in Egypt and Osiris has ties with Dionysus in the same way. These ancient civilizations within that specific area, all orbit the same ideas adding their own flair over time. Like how Set wasn't originally evil during the old Kingdom lore and how Set and the older god concept of Seth sort of co-mingle to become an Egyptian boogeyman later on.

It's not that he's offensively shit but he gets glazed in a way that is totally out of proportion with the products he often produces. The creative autistic X factor isn't there. I, like most fucking people, like TDK but the sterility of Gotham City is an aspect even people that really worship the movie can concede. Now apply that to the fucking Odyssey or depicting the Dunkirk Evacuation and it becomes too bothersome and offensive to ignore. Nolan is not this gigabased autist except insofar as always resisting CGI even when common sense dictates he should embrace it and it WON'T make the product the same as Marvel green screen slop. Dunkirk as a whole, the wet fart of a bomb in Oppenheimer, etc. These things were actively harmed by anti-CGI autism

>>
>>217011027
Isolated shot. Nothing in the movie as a whole worked to indicate a few hundred thousand men were present, Dunkirk the town wasn't a smoking ruin, there was fuck all of a Royal Navy presense when evacuated because they only had one le Destroyer and how dare you use CGI to create doubles, etc. and the characters (especially the Tommies grounded on the beach for a week) were dreadful - not an ounce of gallows humour anywhere which is what such people are known for. And yes I'd say cinematically it was shit to not convey a sense of chaos adjacent to what they showed in the movie Atonement (middling movie though). The whole 'the ENEMY is coming' shit also fell flat because despite the premise of it being a ticking clock there was never anything to indicate they are coming like the sounds of war in the distance (them vs. rearguard actions) growing progressively louder and more violent. I saw the movie in theatres for fuck's sake and found it extremely underwhelming and sterile and that was all downstream from Nolan's own creative choices

he has 2 maybe 3 good films. Batman Begins, The Prestige and depending on the day, Interstellar. The archaeological site of Troy was discovered in 1870 by Heinrich Schliemann, who identified it based on descriptions from Homer's "Iliad." Located in northwest Turkey, the site has revealed multiple layers of ancient settlements, indicating a history of continuous occupation for over 4,000 years.
