Is the anon who made this post ITT?I would assume someone who is also aware of Guiraudie would post here. Didn't catch the time to reply back then.I can understand why someone would prefer first half of John Waters' career to the second one in a sense that "yeah everyone has different tastes", but I just have a hard time seeing the appeal mostly. As I said I enjoyed Mondo Trasho and Multiplie Maniacs more or less, in particular Mondo Trasho for it's hectic nature being a series of vignettes more or less but the colour ones just failed to grab my attention in any way and honestly bored me. Not sure what you mean by "Gen X cliche", Waters is a boomer and his sensibility in general is very much specifically Baby Boomer like. What I can see in later Waters is that those movies are filled with typical baby boomer nostalgia for the 40s-50s complete with portraying that kind of aesthetic with full on kitsch (a very baby boomer thing, Silent Gen for example portrayed first half of American century in a pretty grounded way, for example Summer of 42') and this part I very much enjoy and think this is where Waters' finally found a stylistic footing. Also in a sense his later films are more transgressive than the earlier ones. His early stuff was made mostly for people who already expected the shock, while the latter stuff was seen by a broader audience, more prone to being genuinely weirded out and shocked, even by mild things. Restraint made him more provocative ironically. Also his weakest movie is definitely not Serial Mom lol. It's A Dirty Shame, which is not just poorly made but is like a terrible imitation of John Waters made by the kind of people who watch American Pie on repeat, except John Waters himself made it. It's actively annoying while also being aggressively bland and artless.

To continue. On Gregg Araki, what do you mean stupid? His films aren't exactly thoughtful yeah, but that's not the appeal, and I don't really care. Araki's appeal is in managing to merge the campy elements with a typical 90s melancholy. It's particularly impressive cause Araki was pushing 40 in the 90s but it feels like those movies were made by a 25-30 year old Gen X'r cause they're quintessentially "90s". In fact Myserious Skin, while his most accessible and easy to recommend, I'd say is one of his weaker movies, he is great with melancholy but him getting sentimental? Not that good. Plus the only time I liked the "oi was roiped and now im gay" story is The Conformist and only cause it was a part of a broader theme rather than the focus. Also important to note that the /pol/ fantasy of "little kid gets molested and turns gay" is more or less a fantasy, most of the homos crying about how they were roiped got fucked in the ass in teenage years cause they were being stupid little queers who willingly fell into the uncle pedo's lap. They all start fucking actively at like 14. Yeah, it's still the pedo who is in the wrong mainly, but a teenager should probably also have some fucking agency about what he is doing here, and if didn't have the agency at least stop trying to pretend that shit was a "oi was ambushed / trapped in a house and forcibly penetrated", this ain't how it happened honey and we all know that. What films by Ozon do you mean? His only really good gay focused movie is White Drops on Burning Rocks (filmed from a Fassbinder script no less). Peter Von Kant is fine but a bit of a pointless remake, also felt a lot more like Almodovar than a Fassbinder stylization I think he was going for. Summer of 85' is boring schmaltz, so is By The Grace of God. Other movies of his feature gay stuff only super briefly or not at all, unless I am forgetting something. His best films overall are 8 Women, Sitcom and already mentioned White Drops on Burning Rocks.

Lastly, Fassbinder is great, although I never heard about him being a "meme among gay guys". Maybe cinephile gay guys, but Fassbinder is popular among anyone into cinema cause he is one of the greats. Is he popular among normalfag homos as well? I have no idea. Would be odd as I think Fassbinder is an incredibly challenging and difficult to watch filmmaker. I saw a post on here few threads ago where an anon was talking about his dislike of him and it was totally understandable. I don't think you can recommend him without a disclaimer to just anyone asking for gay films, especially when that nigga put a Queer as Folk picrelated on his post lol.
This anon talking to a guy from another thread who's not even here?
>>217006692L'Empire whatever happened there
>>217006700Well he could be. If he is not here right now maybe he might visit the thread later and see what I posted. If not, then whatever. Maybe someone else will see something in the posts that they might find of interest or worth discussing.
I can conclude that gay niggas make great and often underrated cinema, talk about a tragedy.

Turns out Sarunas Bartas premiered two movies this year, although neither is yet avilable online. He has long fallen out of favor with most stuff from this century getting mediocre to poor reviews, but I'm still interested. Laguna is a semi-documentary set in Mexico, I think this and Freedom are his only films set not in Eastern Europe.
