I don’t think the engineer really needed someone to test AVA to see if she’s realistic. The loser nerd won the contest was merely selected because he’s an obvious awkward nerd and the engineer needed to see if AVA could manipulate then kill. I’m assuming she’s going to be a long line of govt killing spies. He’s was the rat in the maze. He was never meant to even leave that place because he was going to get killed. As AVAs main goal was to see if she could manipulate, kill, then escape. However there was a glitch and she just simply needed to manipulate, kill (anyone) then escape.
