MTV should have made a youtube channel early on. Using their connections it could have been a huge channel that artists would want to be featured on.
G4 and others could have done the same. They all thought they could direct traffic to their own site instead.

We're absolutely in the period for the worst mainstream music since honestly the 1930s, and frankly, nothing mainstream produced probably for the past 20 years will be remembered beyond 2040 and the past 10 years in particular has been extremely bad. Taylor Swift is the biggest artist of the modern age and literally 80% of Western people couldn't name a single song of hers, compare that to the big 80s, 70s, 60s artists. Every Westerner knows a bunch of Michael Jackson or George Michael or Frank Sinatra or the Beatles or Bee Gees or Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan etc and the list goes on for hundreds of artists, yet the mainstream artists today have literally no impact outside of their teen base.
While great music is still being produced, hell I would say King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard is the single best band since the 1970s, yet they aren't that popular beyond the dedicated psychedelic surfer rock fanbase because Mainstream music is more algo dominated than ever and normies never hear shit that their Algos don't already feed them. So a Taylor Swift fan will only ever hear Taylor Swift and garbage like Lana Del Ray and Kelly Clarkson and whatever.
If this was 1995, King Gizzard would literally be Pink Floyd levels popular because Normies would have heard their shit alongside the big mainstream pop artists, but they are not, because Algo's hid their shit to the point they literally told Spotify to go fuck themselves and left it.

Youth culture died when "alternative" in general just became black worshipping idpol.
If Black people do it, it's "cool" and alternative by nature. That has been the general youth outlook since 2005. Wiggers not only won the culture war they basically genocided every other counter-culture from relevance.
The worst part is that since the 1980s Black culture degenerated into the most generic, shittiest state it's ever fucking been. If Black culture stayed to the same level it was from the 1940s-70s, we would still have great music, but it didn't, they dropped everything that wasn't Hip Hop/fake pop RnB and the rest is history.

> period for the worst mainstream music
But here’s the thing dumbass: the mainstream is meaningless. It’s so easy to find new niche music today, you have to be some kind of retard to listen to a radio show at all.
> the mainstream artists today have literally no impact outside of their teen base.
The same reason people have no tentpole watercooler TV shows or movies anymore. It’s a fractured media ecosystem. There’s no monoculture anymore. I don’t know why you’re crying about it, your main argument for old artist being “better” is just that more people knew them - because of the fucking monoculture. YOU SAY THIS WHILE COMPLAINING ABOUT “ALGOS” dictating what the kids are listening to. Are you hearing yourself you fucking retard?
>>
>>217011335

This video is still lit as fuck. In 2025, the low polygon models are back in style. Also, the CG segments were animated by the founders of mainframe Entertainment, who would later go on to make ReBoot, Beast Wars, Shadow Raiders, Action Man, Spider-Man: The New Animated Series (for MTV) and shit like that.

<And so it was our beloved corporate gods

Allowing it to sink as low in one year
As commercial TV has in 25

It's wide open, anything can happen
But you've got a lot of nerve to call yourself a pioneer
When you're too god-damn conservative to take real chances
Tin-eared
Graph-paper brained accountants instead of music fans
Call all the shots at giant record companies now
The lowest common denominator rules
Forget honesty, forget creativity
The dumbest buy the mostest, that's the name of the game
But sales are slumping and no one will say why
Could it be they put out one too many lousy records?!?

MTV has literally been dead ever since Jackass and Clone High were canceled. After Viva la Bam was canceled at the very latest.
Even on the rare occasion they produced anything even REMOTELY of value after that, like Wonder Showzen, that was restricted to airing MTV2, i.e. a channel nobody had and nobody watched, and the only reason anybody even knew about the show or was able to watch it was thanks to it occurring in the era of YouTube and Internet Piracy.

MTV has now literally been shit for a longer portion of its lifespan than it was any good.

They did it themselves. They wanted their primary TV channel to be all about retarded shows that have fuck nothing to do with music videos, so they reap what they deserve.

Personally I think they'd make more money from the boost in advertising if they dumped more channels over the airwaves because somehow regular network TV (CBS, ABC, FOX, NBC) still get higher ratings than cable/internet channels do. A smart businessman would instinctively take what he has to sell to the biggest market.

> There’s no monoculture anymore.
Absolute cope, we are in the most monoculture period of history since the 1950s lmao.
Subcultures are all dead, it's all pure aesthetics now, music tastes are at the shallowest and shittiest they've ever been, the average Zoomer listens to like 5 fucking artists and 2 genres.
Where is goth, where is punk, where is grunge, where is thrash, where is shoegaze, where is Indie, where is Psychedelia, where is alternative? etc etc subcultures are dead because we have a massive vague aesthetics based monolith that has killed them.
> It’s so easy to find new niche music today
Most people don't want to go out and spend time diving through playlists to find new music.
This is why Radio and TV was important, because the curators often played (and were mandated too in certain countries like the UK/Australia etc) 30-40% up and coming indie/alternative/local music to the mainstream stuff. This is how many of the biggest artists became popular.
>OU SAY THIS WHILE COMPLAINING ABOUT “ALGOS” dictating what the kids are listening to. Are you hearing yourself you fucking retard?
Algorithms are nothing like fucking curated music show producers lmao.
Algorithms take what you already listen too and funnel you down a sink hole of the same fucking music. Curated music shows played shit from every style of music while having a decent focus on underground/indie/alternative stuff.
You Zoomers never grew up with this shit, but you're copiums are absurd. We are living in the worst period of mainstream music there is and it's mostly because curated music shows that largely fed alternative music to mainstream audiences died and the mainstream music industry has basically distilled pop music down to focusing entirely on fucking teenage girls.
>>
>>217011481
I’m surprised that the Mind’s Eye series has made some sort of comeback. I used to rent those all the time in the early/mid-90s, and they were great. They were basically showcases of CG shorts from around the world edited together into music videos, with music from guys like Jan Hammer and Thomas Dolby. I love that shit, partly because the rudimentary CG is such a time capsule.

TRL went dead in 2008. Jersey Shore premiered in 2009.
Everyone had iPods four years earlier.

MTV did not adapt to changing tastes for art, music, and entertainment for young people. They jumped on trends, lost the plot, and they died. Just like G4.
Cartoon Network was able to adapt.

When the money men run the network, it’s dead.
>>
>>217011511

Their problem isnt production. MTV still produces plenty of stuff that makes them money. A lot of the Taylor Sheridan shows like Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown are MTV Entertainment Group productions.

She's popular because she's the pop equivalent of rappers who write "diss tracks" and shit-talk every ex and friend she ever had while tossing in "totally sad" ballads about how she's fucked a thousand men, and she's the victim of them all because the one common denominator in all of her failed relationships could not possibly be to blame.

And she's a fucking snake. She makes every friend and every ex sign NDAs so none of them can shit-talk her right back, and have to just sit there and take it from her. Plus she's a coke-head, which isn't really a secret.

This may fuck up your worldview, but there are a lot of people who don't listen to that shit at all. And there are a lot of people who can't name a lot fo Beatles songs due to not giving a fuck.
