I don't know where in Australia that accent is from but a lot of the Australian migrants in California sound like that. I know it's not standard Australian after going there but a lot do sound like that in LA where Tarantula is from. I think we get a lot of the rurals who were recently educated. My understanding is that the accent has died out major population centers in the last 30 years as American/British English is dominant and coopted in major global urban areas but it's still hard in the middle of no where towns. Same thing here. You don't really hear strong Minnesota or southern accents prevalent until you hit the small towns or talk to old people.
