Stereotypically, it was assumed that people who used this stuff must be lonely.Ironically this same attitude was reserved for internet users too. Message boards and chat room were for nerds. I was a prolific BBS and forum user starting in the mid90s, and I almost never told my friends about it - it wasn't a secret, but you didn't offer the information.I've had online-only friends for 30 years. Until very recently, this was basically secret. Even now that it's become normal, I still feel like it's slightly taboo.
