Why were the 60's such a great decade for movies?
>>
The art film and new wave were born in late 50s - early 60s as a reaction to spread and popularity of television.

The fall of the studio system gave directors carte blanche to make the kinos they wanted.
It helped that these directors were in touch with and influenced by the counterculture, which makes squares aka chuds seethe.

The dismantling of the Hays Code meant that a movie like Bonnie and Clyde, where the protagonists are criminals and presented sympathetically, could be made
>>
It also meant that movies with risque sexual content, like The Graduate, could also be made without being slapped with obscenity charges
>>
Meanwhiles on the other side of the Pond you had the French experimenting with every cinematic trick in the book and breaking all the rules

Overall the 60s produced so many kinos because it was the last time when the forces of good were on the offensive and this allowed artistic flourishing to happen.
It was the high watermark of the left, it really felt like we were going to change the world but then the revolution was betrayed and the forces of reaction overran us. The Man won and we are living with the consequences ever since.
