>hey I like Bob Dylan, let's check out this movie
>immediate cringe pro-commie politics with Ed Norton
Oh, boy. They just can't help themselves. These Bob Dylan movies never mention that he only had left wing sympathies for 3 years while he was dating Suze Rotollo, and then completely abandoned them after they broke up. And that he hated leftist media projecting all their bullshit onto him.

He was shit at writing songs but he had a lovely voice

I will never watch a Timothy Chalamet movie

>>217022613
The only good Dylan movie was I'm Not There because it realized that he was never ''real'' as far as audiences are concerned. He's just a troubadour who managed to get away with making songs about whatever he wants for decades on end.
Anyway, check out the Another Self Portrait release of the Bootleg Series. Some lovely songs on that album.

He seemed breddy chill. He had recorded one of the definitive versions of "House of the Rising Sun" before The Animals, but the first time their version came on the radio he allegedly stopped the car he was driving to listen to it and started slapping the hood in time with the beat. He recognized supreme talent.
>>
>>217022736
I don't even mind him as Bob Dylan. He pulls it off. But politically activated people cannot make good movies. I don't care what side you're on. Modern Hollywood is no different than the Left Behind series that they used to always mock.

Is it really a surprise that a hippie folk musician would have commie sentiments

He was conservative publicly for longer than he was "progressive". I would argue that the bulk of his 60s work was criticizing and lampooning the leftwing media. Why does Hollywood always forget that he hated the media? It was a pretty big part of his personality.

I like the movie simply because im a bob dylan fan and imagine what it was like during that time. This is obviously romanticised and Dylan seem to luck into things when in reality he was a chancer (like what ive heard of this Marty Supreme movie). People also have the idea from this movie that he betrayed Joan Baez which is absurd. Dylan was getting offers in spite of her and not because of her for the most part (she did give him some exposure of course). The timeline stuff annoyed me but I had to overlook those details. Chalamet was doing an adequate impression of Dylan but its like Man on the Moon or any other biography where its more like caricature. It doesnt help that you can see Dylan's manner in docs like Dont Look Back which Chalamet didnt capture imo. I should probably try that Springsteen movie but was turned off by Landau voice over in the trailer talking about how this is a different Bruce. I was expecting something more natural.

Thats the thing, people imagine the demonstrations, writers or think tanks but the whole villiage had its seedy elements as well. Old lechers preying on the naive girls, the users and abusers who lived on the good will of others and the dope fiends. Dylan was a well known user of people.
>>
he was spiritually chud
>>
>>217023312
I always thought that the glamorization of the 60s flower power shit would die off with Boomers, but apparently not.
>>
They should have included his Tom Paine award speech where he spoke out against the people trying to appropriate him. He did defend people going to Cuba though and civil liberty groups in that speech. Thats the famous speech where he saw some of himself in Lee Harvey Oswald and was booed. He also said he was tired of seeing bald heads all around him congratulating him and awarding him like this when all he wanted was to be amongst friends. I think it would have been a nice segway between folkie and james dean dylan.
>>
this movie does a very good job of portraying bob dylan as a mercurial asshole who attaches to various movements and writes brilliant songs within them and takes inspiration from them but leaves them behind and pete seeger is left in the dust to his ambition and future prospects

op is well aware of this and just sowing strife on 4chan for whatever normal reason people do that

I always think about that scene from Fritz the Cat where he bullshits some college girls into getting naked in a tub with him after pretending to be part of the causes they prattle on about. Thats my image of the 60s. There was no such thing as free love it was just easier to forgive yourself by calling it that when you were cheated or cheated someone else.

Nah, Dylan was one of the best singers of the 60s because he revolutionised how people approach a song. He didnt just sing a song, he inhabited it. Thats why i dont agree with that bullshit about covers of his song being better. In Just Like A Woman for example he is able to convey sarcasm, resentment, empathy and pity all at once. Most of the covers of his songs just convey the one emotion to you like those slowed down covers you get in movie trailers now. The people who were influenced by not only thought about the words but how they would convey them. In fairness, there are certain era where i dont like his voice such as live stuff in the neverending tour and when he was shouting lyrics during rolling thunder (although im warming to it).

It’s an awful movie but holy shit zoomer you are dumb if you think bob dylan was conservative in any form. spent his whole life hanging out with black people and nearly married a black celebrity who turned him down (film covered this for like 5 seconds with that dumb party).

>>217023604
>Apparently his career blows up from this.

Like a Rolling Stone was a hit before he came to the festival. Everyone was here to see him and had a certain image in their head. Dylan gave them his new material and nothing else. Its a bit complicated because the concert he did after it in Forest Hills people booed the electric set at times (after being quiet for the acoustic half) but applauded when started playing rolling stone. They wanted the folk Dylan more than the electric one at Newport and felt entitled to it.

He was also a born again Christian who made gospel albums and spent the majority of his life rejecting hippie shit. He also hated the media. Unfortunately you have lived your entire life through Hollywood retrospectives.
>>
>>217023653

He also wrote a song for George Jackson who was the equivalent of George Floyd at the time and Rubin Carter. He was brought back to the fold every now and then. He also had a child with his black back up singer in the 80s.
>>217023725
His Christian era can hardly be called conservative in that he was calling out the the wests relationship to oil money and other capitalist evils.
>>
>>217023738
All that foreign oil controlling American soil
Look around you, it’s just bound to make you embarrassed
Sheiks walkin’ around like kings
Wearing fancy jewels and nose rings
Deciding America’s future from Amsterdam and to Paris
And there’s a slow, slow train comin’ up around the bend

Man’s ego is inflated, his laws are outdated, they don’t apply no more
You can’t rely no more to be standin’ around waitin'
In the home of the brave
Jefferson turnin’ over in his grave
Fools glorifying themselves, trying to manipulate Satan
And there’s a slow, slow train comin’ up around the bend
>>
Was this the Dylan film about some manufactured controversy of him playing an electric guitar and cheating on his gf with Joan baez and it was a predictable letdown overall?
>>
>>217023738
Buddy. He made an entire album rejecting the progressive media putting labels onto him. Believe it or not, 99% of his songs weren't about black people. That's you projecting your obsession with black people onto him.

I had a professor back in college try tell the class that Ballad of a Thin Man was about civil rights. That's you.

>>217023784
Sounds like an anti-globalist song to me. Would a liberal even criticize Muslims? Yea, I don't think so.

Just face it, he wasn't a 21st century redditor no matter how much you want him to be.
>>
>>217023800
>manufactured controversy of him playing an electric guitar

that shit wasnt manufactured but certainly it wasnt as bad as his british tour. Some of his shows in America went okay such as Hollywood Bowl but others featured a good portion of books like Forest Hills. He probably cheated with 2 dozen girls but Baez thought she was special. The movie made her more stoic than she was because she followed him like a little girl to england in 65 expecting him to invite her on stage but he never did (whilst also sleeping around whilst she was back at the hotel). Baez never got over him dedicating full albums to his material. He tried to seduce her in the 80s again like his side piece had come back for a visit.

No he belonged to a branch of born again Christianity which didnt want america to stay the same or believe in any other form of worship such as money or power. He wasnt a capitalist preacher giving you the prosperity gospel. He wasnt a liberal either in that respect telling people that their desires and 'freedoms' opened them to the traps of satan.
>>
>>217023990
>He wasnt a capitalist preacher
This is your idea of conservative or right wing because you've lived your entire life through a Hollywood lense. You are just proving my point over and over. But hey, you're on the right side of history according to yourself.
>>
>>217024022
>>217023990
One of his most infamous songs was about a black woman who was beaten to death by a rich white guy in the South ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll.") But he also wrote a song about how Israel is innocent in 1982 ("Neighborhood Bully" so it is a mixed bag

>Wussies and pussies complain about that stuff. It’s an old thing – it’s part of the tradition. It goes way back. These are the same people that tried to pin the name Judas on me. Judas, the most hated name in human history! If you think you’ve been called a bad name, try to work your way out from under that. Yeah, and for what? For playing an electric guitar? As if that is in some kind of way equitable to betraying our Lord and delivering him up to be crucified. All those evil motherfuckers can rot in hell.’

>>217025029
I disagree man, Dylan changes song arrangements all the time. He changes lyrics even more often. Simple Twist of Fate has like 10+ versions. He's not just going through the motions. You can't write a song like Murder Most Foul if you are on autopilot
>>
>>217025179
I do like the amount of bootleg versions he has. The Blood on the Tracks bootlegs are all pretty much better than the tracks on the album.

Not the guy you are replying to but i cant even listen to the album anymore; I just stick with the new york sessions bootleg. I think Dylan is the most bootlegged artist in music. The only band that comes close is the beach boys in terms of stuff that hasnt been released (until the last 20 years)
