Does Marlo's gangsterism seem mildy impotent in vibe? Like after he leaves the game no one knows who he is or respects him.
good criminals don't have good stories
I sorta thought that was just commentary on how quickly the gangster world move son but then again Avon is probably going to be remembered like the randoms that Prop Joe brings up, what is it about Marlo that makes him less memorable? He definitely laid low a lot but thats not the reason the show is making. Is it just because hes only feared and not loved by his community?
>>217030422He was a charisma vacuum. People like that don't get remembered.
>>217030443but thats not the idea the show is selling thats the idea viewers might forget him. The show never says Avon is remembered because hes charismatic, and the same with any of their rememebered drug kingpins
>>217030300That was the point. Marlo got Stringer's ending while Omar got the one he wanted. That's also why it's mirrored with Weebay and Chris both being in prison, Dookie becoming a fiend while Bubbles gets sober. There's an ebb and flow to things.
>>217030300he was a flash in the pan.
>>217030300That's exactly the point. All he wanted was for his "name to ring out" on the streets, he gets off scot free but he's immediately forgotten, his worst nightmare.
>>217030527>omarI think you meant avon. Marlo wanted Omar's reputation but was a nobody. the last scene with marlo the crew he antagonizes was talking about Omar going out guns blazing with an AK but they didnt know who marlo was
>>217030300Some little corner pusher wouldn't know him by sight. And that wasn't even his part of town. He just walked out of a downtown party and to the nearest slum area. It's a big city. Remember all the New York guys all around that Snoop and Chris took out? And the street moves fast. How much later was that? Marlo had retired. I don't think if some random dude in a nice suit rolls up you're supposed to know he was the heroin kingpin when you're just some low level dealer kid.
>>217030571It died on the vine
>>217030527The wheel keeps turning.
>>217030638He means that Omar got the ending that Marlo desired, even though he is dead, he lives on as a legend, with more and more fantastical deeds attributed to him, nothing like his real death, which was pathetic and anticlimactic. Marlo's only concern in life seemed to be the status of his "name", he barely even had any hobbies besides some gambling, doesn't seem to spend any of the money he makes from his drug gang, holds court in a lawnchair in an empty lot, etc.
The irony is that because he was so oversensitive and volatile when it came to his name and reputation, that Chris and Snoop actually regularly kept things from him because they knew he would overreact and put himself in the crosshairs, and would try to take out any people who either talked shit about him or were rumored to have talked shit about him so it wouldn't get back to him. The result is his gang was exceptionally lethal, even for Baltimore, but he also was not very visible as the leader, he wasn't going down getting his hands dirty, or personally appearing to conduct gang business outside of the co-op meetings. So no wonder he was forgotten quickly and easily.
>>217030645good points, also they might know the name Marlo but how many people in the early 2000s especially are going to know what a guy looks like thats not directly connected to him
>>217030300He wanted it to be one way, but it was the other way.
>>217030300He's just another nigga in the hood. That's kind of the whole point at the end.
He would only be remembered for his brutality and willingness to kill
>>217030422> what is it about Marlo that makes him less memorable? He was an insane person who had anyone killed for looking at him the wrong way. I think everyone was happy to have him gone
>>217030422He's plenty memorable but for his own reasons. Compared to Avon who is ruthless but very much a fully formed person, Marlo seems stunted and incomplete, like an empty shell. He's a more realistic depiction of a genuine sociopath.
>>217030300He simply had no showmanshipAvon connected with his communityAt least he had some good lines now and then >Price of the brick just went up
>>217032073>some spiderman shit there
>>217030764How did he build his empire though? He has the charisma and leadership qualities of a wet sponge. At no point was he ever portrayed as a leader, as someone who knows how to get shit done, or even having some deep insight and understanding of how life in the ghetto works. Dude was a cardboard cut out everytime he showed up.
>>217032514He was shrewd and ruthless, cares nothing about power (and even then in the end he didn't care about the power). "Cardboard cut out" is his tragedy, he's empty. The show also doesn't give him much of a backstory
>>217033180*cares about nothing except for power
>>217030422While the show doesn't show Avon doing things for his community he wasn't as blatantly ruthless as Marlo was, who was killing people in abandoned apartments. No one wants to look up to that, only weirdos who crave power and nothing else and that's what makes him unrelatable to the average hustler on the street. Imagine if you're a kid in the wire universe if avon or stringer come along you could see yourself looking up to them in their cars handling business riding around in their cars. All people would say about Marlo is that he's on top and he'll kill you for nothing. You're not getting popular with dealers just by being a straight up murderer. He was also never around and didn't want to deal with the "soldiers"
>>217033180>>217032514They based him on the modern criminals who operated in Baltimore after all the OGs were in prison, they were extremely emotionless compartmentalized sociopaths who ran a really tight ship and avoided making big waves like the OGs did.
