How did it remain good while others like Family Guy failed?
>>
American Dad was always a third rate less funny version of Family Guy.
>>
the characters actually like each other

The U-People
>>
>>217040244
American Dad was never good
>>
>>217040244
it isnt, you just have really poor taste
>>
>>217040244
not a single character in that image is funny, and yet its an enjoyable show.
a true head squeezer
>>
>>217040280
This.
They are also consistent personality-wise, unlike Family Guy, where everybody personally changes based on the scene.
Another thing I admire about American Dad is pairing up all characters with each character.
In American Dad, every A plot is always Peter and the guy/Louis, while the B plot is always Brian and Stewie.
>>
Maybe baby
>>
Why do we pretend FG is bad? It’s not as hilarious but it’s still funny
>>
>>217040553
It's chuckle worthy but American dad has more heart.

The later episodes can either be real hits or misses. When they do hit though then it's really goddamn great.
>>
>>217040280
>>217040462
The show has more seasons where this hasn't been true than otherwise.
>>
>>217040244
Seth McFarlane is no longer involved in its production.
>>
>>217041125
What do you mean?
I guess the best argument you can make is Stan's hatred Jeff and dislike of Roger.
But that hasn't been case for 10 years
>>
>>217041172
Seth always focused on FG
>>
>>217041233
And American Dad benefited greatly from this.
>>
>>217040841
I don’t watch these shows for heart.
>>
>>217040244
Roger being able to take up any part in any given episode.
They have a lot of different pairings that work well.
They still like to experiment and do weird episodes regularly.
They got lucky with new writers.

>>217040271
There hasn’t been a cutaway gag in American Dad! since early season 1.
>>
>>217040244
It's a better combination of characters and has better writers.

yeah and another thing I'm wondering, why would someone shoot a man before throwing them out of a plane?
>>
>>217040244
By being less popular they avoided woke writers. Also people like Stan x his wife and he is still a decent dad
>>
>>217040271
Its jokes are on average funnier than Family Guy’s, especially since Family Guy jokes for the last 15 years have just been wholly irrelevant to what they were in service of.
>>
>Actual jokes with timing, setups, pay offs, and call backs, not just "Hey here this pop culture thing, isn't that funny?"
>Characters are all likeable and have defined comedic angles
>Roger being able to wild card as literally anything they need and the family knowing it's him and putting up with his shit.
>The dad isn't clinically retarded like Peter to the point it's infuriating, he's got his flaws for sure but he's still masculine and cares about his family
>Wife isn't a raging slut, the marriage stan and francine has is actually pretty wholesome. Compared to Lois cheating on Peter and and treating him like a retarded child
>No overly preachy segments or characters like anything Brian does
>Even the punching bag shit with klaus isn't as mean spirited as the shit they do with Meg
>>
>>217040244
Killing people or making Stan a cuck because they can't write more stories isn't good writing
>>
>>217040244
Its quite simple, and you'll notice many shows with these qualities also maintain their rating.
>never peaked higher than FG, SP's best seasons
>never dipped bellow FG, SP's worst seasons
>maintain a healthy 7-8/10 rating
>Multiple main characters
>Each MC has their own cast of wacky characters to develop stories out of
>Each MC's sidekicks have their own lore and lives
>Developed setting makes world feel lived in
>Comedy works best when it feels familiar to any year or place (aka: it doesnt depend on cultural references, at least everything after season 2 doesnt)
>Follow the "plot A meets plot B to their consequences" consistently
>Lives actually change in lore

This usually determines success in most shows with lots of characters. Let's see where FG fails:
>Peter and Brian and Stewie are the only true MCs
>Their sidekicks dont have much that isn't connected to their respective MC's
>World feels empty, even in design
>Jokes depend on cultural references
>Jokes are usually skits, not connected to plot A or B

This did mean that family guy is the perfect show for the Tik-Tok era, as that site shows, ppl love cutaway gags. This is also true for robot chicken, but saddly its not as popular, or ever will be.

Next time you see an american dad episode, i want you to keep track:
>how many decorative elements does each room have for each character
>how many characters show up with their own plot C, D, etc
>how many plots converge into plot A
>how many interactions depend solely on the MC
>how many funny moments are just references
>how many funny moments are things that happen to the characters
>how many jokes are in universe characters having fun talking to one another
>how many jokes are a result of a characters actions and their consequences

Stack this up to FG and you'll notice how emptier it feels, a lack of genuenly human fun in the dialogues between friends, etc.

If a world feels homey, you feel as if it's home.

Why does American Dad have so much more detail to it's characters?
>>
>>217043055
>>Wife isn't a raging slut,
Francine is canonically a megaslut. She just settled down with stan
>>
I just realized they never once took a shot at Drumpf despite it once being a political show that did Bush and Obama episodes.

I kinda feel the writers think that shit is way beneath them
>>
>>217043055
as much as i like francine and stan, technically she is a slut, remember her rose garden? or the episode where she acts like a slut to get into the backstage of a concert

>>217043247
Altho in the concert episode, she does kiss a girl and flaunt her tits to the guard, AND she did bang waaaaaaayyyy more people before her marriage. I dont think she ever did anything with someone else.

Now, IRONICALLY, stan HAS "cucked" francine:
>the divorce episode, precisely so stan could bang someone else once
>the bathtub episode, altho he doesnt bang those 2 chicks, many ppl would consider hanging out with 2 hot chicks who arent your wife to be cheating (because lets be real, he was gonna bang them)
>the spring break episode (altho stan didnt have any intentions with the girl, you try to tell your wife "yeah, spent all spring break with this hot blonde and we even got all touchy" and see how long till the divorce comes through)

Havent seen much of the post 2020 seasons, but im sure there might be new examples
>>
>>217040244
flew under the radar but never crashed, crafted its own chaotic universe
>>
>>217040244
Seth isn't in the writers room.
>>
>>217044924
Seth hasn't written for Family Guy in over a decade. The writers at FG are just Reddit Millenials
>>
It didn't, most of the episodes are awful but for some reason it always lands on a couple episodes of absolute kino every season. My guess is they have a top writer who shows up when he wants and the rest if handled by interns.
>>
>>217042588
How would Stan handle the plane scene?
