Raytracing is a hard sell because all the rasterization tricks got so good before it became viable that raytracing uses 5x the power to get 1.2x the results. BUT in the case of raytracing it's just passive power usage and upfront hardware cost. In the case of things like volumes they CAN look great, but that 5x work actually still needs to be done by an effects team, so instead we're getting 1x work being done, and things look 0.5x as good as they would on a greenscreen.
