All those specific failures are downstream of the fact that the story had already hit all its notes by the end of season 1. Like, I can see an argument of all the main characters (too many of them for this to work desu, but maybe the REAL main ones) having to come to terms with their worst fears so that vecna couldn't use them against them... but then vecna didn't even do that. It was basically just

Demogorgons reduced to low tier grunts. The rest of the upside monsters suddenly missing. The "Hive mind" rules no longer matter for some reason. The military focusing solely on Eleven while ignoring Vecna for the entire show. Dr Kay introduced and forgotten in a flash. Despite the story hinting the Mindflayer had psychic powers, his true gigantic complete form was just a giant spider who only stomps and bites. Easy to defeat.

The overall plot was stupid and full of retcons, holes and just poor writing.

Fixed the ending

Every plot was rushed and sloppy despite them spending 3 years on it, for instance the plot with Will could have been more significant if he were unable to control Vecna until the final battle, could have spruced it up even more with an arc where he falls under a Vecna mind control spell. Mindflayer was nerfed to hell, no psychic powers, no minions of any kind. The past Hawkins served no purpose. The s4 cliffhanger was just glossed over. In general the character actions and dialogue were very meta (not realistic behavior, acting like they know they are in a show).

The fact that they started with two Strange Things: the demogorgon and Eleven.

Then instead of having more and Stranger Things, they combined them so it's really only one Strange Thing and beating it just took all the exact solutions they have been applying the whole time.

There was only one Thing and by the showdown, it had become Normal. This process took 17 years and all the children were in wheelchairs an hearing aids by the end.

I only watched the first four episodes, but my takeaways from it were

>Henry is a completely different character and is even more of an absentee villain/retard than he was previously portrayed
That's about it. Anything else I could mention is redundant because they're the same issues from S2 onwards. The show is cyclical, wherein very little seems to carry over except the same thematic story beats that just repeat. It's like Westworld, but somehow even worse, and the repetition was actually a plot point wherein here it's just indecisive writers.
Actually, that's what the show as a whole feels like; a writer who has a decent idea with very obvious influences who then continues to scrap, rewrite and update his idea to add in more influences to make it seem more original, but fails miserably. Except instead of scrapping, they actually spent hundreds of millions adapting each "new" idea over a decade.
S2 is just a gayer version of S1, S3 is just a gayer version of S2, and so on. They're the exact same fucking thing with very little to distinguish them. Every gimmick-of-the-week ends up being resolved the same as the last one. Each season is like watching an eleven hour episode of Scooby-Doo.
What a fucking travesty.

It's not a continuation of S4

By now the show had jumped too many sharks to where it could never go back to S1 kino, but S4 salvaged what it had become and put it back on the rails as best it could with a satisfying finale that sets up the final showdown

And then S5 starts and just ignores all that

It turned the show into marvel slop, and a very poorly executed one at that. There's 0 grounding and 0 emotional impact. The big emotional scenes (hopper suicide bombing, unproposal, coming out, el suicide) all failed, the antags completely failed as threats (??? military, vecna just being hunted by el, mf being just a big mindless monster).

No one ever suggests the extremely obvious act of making an alliance with the military. Yes, the military wants to abduct 11. But you know what the military also doesn't want? Earth to be fused with another dimension controlled by a psychic hivemind of monsters.

OBVIOUSLY there would be a betrayal along the way that they would have to outmaneuver or outsmart, but the stakes at the end are SO HIGH that not at least making the attempt to reach out to the military and warn them about whats going on is just irresponsible.

Personally, I'd expect that the military would respond by putting a nuke in the Upside Down, ready to blow if things got too hairy, and then it turns into the main cast trying to rescue the kidnapped kids before the government blows the bridge and traps them in another universe forever to save the rest of the world.

The ending felt like the ending to season 5, not the ending for the entire franchise.
No one died. Even Eleven may still be alive.
People leading the experiments are still out there.
Mindflayer is still out there.
There's explicitly other ways to create wormholes as they russians were about to.
Half the characters don't even feel like they got a happy ending. Mike didn't.

The problem doesn't feel solved, and none of the characters really got any concrete closure as a result. It feels like there's supposed to be one more season.
