Pretty sure it's a quintilogy. I know Cameron said he'll finish the story in book form if Fire And Ash flops but I hope it doesn't, because I really want to see this story finish on the big screen.

I can understand someone not liking them, but where does "hate" enter into it? Like, when you hate someone you want to kill their children in front of them to see the look in their eyes. How could you ever hate a movie?

Someone with charisma. Someone who's presence, both on and off screen, would match the industry-shaking footprint of this franchise. His face would be on everything from Happy Meals to video game conventions, and it needed to be a face people remembered.

Doug is classic midwit+decade of getting brainwashed by nihilistic and soulles crap like MCU and Nolan slop.
So when he faces something real and soulful he feels there is nothin left in him for these movies to evoke, and he hates that feeling.
Sad, but good riddance.

Worthington had like a two year stretch where he was in Avatar, Terminator, Clash of the Titans, and Black Ops with Ed Harris, Gary Oldman, and Ice Cube back when Call of Duty ruled the world.

What happened? Did he refuse the Hollywood Moloch worship/humiliation rituals every actor needs to perform to be allowed to make the jump to A lister?

It's NPC programming. A person who truly hates a movie will not even bother to know about it. Look at Matrix 4. It's almost memoryholed because the fans of the original trilogy don't even want to see any clips or pictures of it.

I commented about this in another thread. I watched an interview with Sam Wortinghton and Stephen Lang earlier today where they said that one of the best things about being in Avatar movies is that it's like an indie movie saga with giant blockbuster budgets. They are a tightly-knit group of people, comfortable with each other, not restricted by boards or studios commitee, with not even time restricted, all of them united to bring Jim's vision into life. He also said that he stepped away from Hollywood after his short-lived blockbuster stretch, escaping the big studio machine.

Oh nice, found it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml35Yvx76aM

>Quatrich dropped Venezuela was a mean bush line
>Quatrich's gf was hard to deal with because she was a fighter
>She died during the battle in the first movie
>Quatrich hooked with Varang, fiery fighter girl

My headcanon now is that Quatrich's gf was venezuelan chick who he fell for, and now everything about Varang is reminding him of her. Him losing his love and finding it again in the same place also is quite symbolic.
>>
>>217067813
He works great because he isn't a polished super star. He seems like a regular guy. Both in the movies and in real life. Humble, down to earth, not pushing to the center for attention. There's also something rough and unrefined about him. Not quite blue collar but apporaching that. Makes him a pretty good leading man for the underdog side of a conflict.

Worthington is oozing dad vibes. Watch any interview with him, the guy is perfect in dad's role. No the slob type, but actual backbone of the family, the kind of guy who can belt his kids but also will die for them. And also the one who would crack some dad jokes.
I think Cameron and we were lucky with him. He perfectly fits the role of Jake.

I think if not Neteyam's death and whole cascade effect of it, it would be actually easy to edit TWoW and FaA together.
The whole Mangkwan segment could be easily the very first mission new Quatrich would get. Then fall in love, find his son, yada yada, fight over it with Jake.
But Neteyam had to die in the end, otherwise death wouldnt feel impactful, and without his death there'd be no character arc of healing for both Jake and Neytiri.
It kinda of hard to make it a one movie without taking out crucial plot.

It works for a character like Jake, but it wouldn't feel right for Quaritch. For him as a rigid-thinking marine you have to do everything slowly, you have nurture his identity crisis gently, and only after it grows big enough you introduce him to something that gives a paradigm shift

Sam Worthington was definitely a bit lukewarm in Avatar, but in these two sequels, he has been fantastic. It depends on his character as well. Jake started out without too much going on in terms of depth and personality but it's really interesting to see how he has changed over the years, but also how he hasn't changed. He talks and sounds like that same jarhead but he sees everything differently, what started out as a loose cannon with nothing to lose has become a very concerned and fragile person who has so many people depending on him and struggles to find the way forward, regardless of his attachment to the Na'vi that human side of him shines through always and prevents him from believing that "Eywa will provide".

He and Zoe Saldana have mastered playing believable characters with real emotions and I have no idea how they can do it so well in just a sound stage. I love them in this scene in particular.

Easier to say what I didn't like.
>ending didn't wrap up well enough, though the fight with Jake and Quaritch was kino
>I wanted more ash tribe
>Spider needs a less punchable face
>Cameron can't write kid dialogue for shit, but this has always been a Jim problem since T2
Other than that, movie was great. I liked that it was way more character driven than 2 and even 1. Binding of Isaac scene was kino. Neytiri hitting boiling point was kino. Kiri ended up being kino.
Shit was good.

I just came back from a rewatch and now I fully believe the test screening leaker. There was too much unexplained stuff in the third act so I believe the reshoots in 2025 were to cut out the terraforming plot. I want the original version. Release the Cameron Cut.

More than unfounded, you fell for a marketing tactic.
4 and 5 were only gonna get shut down if it did Megalopolis numbers, and then it was gonna be an emergency sunk cost shutdown since scenes in 4 and 5 are already filmed and the investment for a lot of production is already there.
Good word of mouth (people actually like this one) is a good thing too. Franchise is 99% secure.

There weren't any reshoots I don't think. They filmed 95% of FAA with TWOW from 2017-2020 and then came back and did the last 5% in early 2024. Maybe he cut stuff out that he decided he wanted to save for 4 and cobbled together a condensed ending, but the guy who made that post was talking about alternate character deaths, which seems impossible from what we know about the movie's production

I enjoyed the movie too. Still very disappointed with:
>Jake in prison was so lame. He's captured, stuck in a box in an orange jumpsuit, people take photos, and he's rescued fifteen minutes later wow.
>General Ardmore was a giant waste. Avatar 1's military leader was epic and more of that was implied to be in the next movies. She's introduced kickboxing in her skelsuit, she'll surely have some badass scenes like Quartich coming up. Oh ok, they just want to keep the 2nd movie only focused on Quaritch, well she'll definitely be more involved in the 3rd. *Wait three years*...oh she did nothing but ride on the boat and die.
>Way too many fakeout deaths, which didn't happen in the other two
>Making Quartich have too many quippy comic relief remarks

>General Ardmore was a giant waste.

I think in general as the focus in 2 and 3 shifted onto Hybrid part of Bad Guys, human part of them suffered.
Ardmore in 2 and 3, and Selfridge in 3 felt too much like NPCs, more than they should.
Selfridge was especially sad example, as he felt a proper human being with all sets of negatives but still showing glimpses of consciousness.
I'd wish he came back in 3rd possessing some of those positive traits he might get in those what - 14 years? But he just was in the default bad guy state and had utilitarian amount of screen time.
Sad. He didn't die, am i right? Maybe he will get better material in 4th, as we will approach Earth in 5th.

Even the deaths he mentioned line up with the movie. Lyle is entirely missing in the final act. And it made no sense for the General to be there for a whaling operation, clearly the flux was intended to be a terraforming hole or something.

All fun and games, but actual military hasn't been deployed in Pandora, only private mercs and some basic protection you give to oil companies and miners. Shit only became important when they realized they could live forever killing off Tulkun whales.

I wonder if humanity will become serious and sends actual military might to pandora.

I hope in 4th and 5th we will get a new actually complex human villain.
As Quatrich will potentially become Pandoran defender from RDA (can't see him being Jake's ally outright but i think we are done with him being RDA ally), and there will be 7-8 years of time skip after Act 1 (first 30-40 mins of the movie) just in time for another RDA raid to show up, it would make sense there will be someone BIG coming from Earth.
Would be cool if CEO himself will show up, played by some A-lister.
>>
>>217072093
That's why it was a waste. Cameron could have chosen a better actor and given the character more to do. I like Quaritch and his arc, but I really dislike that the series has become all about him now. Which just resulted in the constant capture and release of the kids and Jake.
>>
You know, what really irks me is when they are on the air nomads' ship and in those 5 minutes Jimbo
>makes Jake call out Lo'ak for not wearing his comms
>makes a scene specifically showing that Lo'ak takes off his comms
>makes a scene where Lo'ak goes back for his comms and there is a long shot of them being burned
Wouldn't just leaving the line from Jake, or even just have Lo'ak go "oh shit, I must have left my comms back on the ship" be enough?

Also what do you think about the guns scene at the start? Is it going to be relevant in the next movie or do you think the rumors about the rewrites are true?
>>
The third act of this last movie seemed very weak imo. Perhaps the weakest arc of all the films. Like, whatever, ANOTHER whaling operation, "lets make BUCK!". whatever, we all know the RDA is going to have her ass beat, and that Eywa powa will save everyone in the end. At least we got more scenes of the crab mecha KINO. I just hope this whale-hugging thing is over. Initially, I liked the Tulkun part, but it dragged on TOO MUCH.

I really don't want that. What I loved about Avatar is it gave lesser known or unknown actors a shot, and they could own their characters. It would be horrible for someone like Matt Damon or Tom Cruise to show up and all you would see is those actors rather than the character.

>>
>>217072236
I agree. First 2 hours felt tight but both build up for final act and act itself felt weaker than everything before.
Battle can be separated in four phases, three of them had own flaws:
>Na'vi vs RDA - Na'vi had literal cakewalk, there was barely tension, i sat with pokerface there;
>Mangkwan showing up - Na'vi suddenly started dropping like a flies without much resistance - tension raised but it felt extremely one-sided; RDA continued their whale hunting showing zero reaction on the fact that most of their people got their ass kicked - this felt weird;
>Eywa responded - kinda lame that it was basically an attack of tentacle boys. I wished there were way more species. Again - one-sided slaughter;
>Jake vs Quatrich. That was alright.

Most of the battle didn't make me locked in completely. Compared to those in first one or even a second one, i think it was a bit phoned in direction and script wise.

Between him serving in warzone hellhole, living without legs in a dystopian shithole, getting regularly beaten in pub while drinking hard as fuck, while living in a shadow of genius brother i think Jake has very few happy memories about Earth.
Would be funny though if RDA had some DNA leftovers of his brother to clone him for some reason to be a villain in 4th and 5th.

The entire time the final battle was playing out I couldn't shake off this feeling that Fire and Ash was not supposed to end on a big battle scene, but Cameron inserted a Best Of in the last minute cut together from leftover shit because he didn't have much faith in it succeeding and wanted some kind of climax for the series.

I'm very sure the whale arc is over. Literally nothing else they can do with that and it finished
Avatar 2 and 3 feel like two halves of a two-parter, because that's ultimately what they are.
I'd bet money 4 and 5 is gonna be the same. 4'll be all setup and 5'll be all payoff, but since 5 is supposed to be some level of series ending, it'll inevitably be more satisfying.
>>
>>217072658
I think that if the battle in the second movie ended up like in a total RDA victory, this second whaling battle could be more palatable. I think at this point is clear that they are going to bring REAL weapons to pandora, instead of trying to push the navi with mining equipment and merchant ships

>>217072311
>>217072415
That's really the genius of Quartich overall. Quaritch was a good villain because he wasn't just generic evil asshole in the first place. His ire with Jake was personal. Jake betrayed him and he was morally sound in his anger at treason.
Quaritch's clone has those memories, but also understands that the memories aren't his own. Quaritch sees Jake as a traitorous fuck, but in the back of his head he also knows that Jake never betrayed him personally. Objectively speaking there's no bad blood between na'vi Quaritch and Jake. Quaritch is just taking on his predecessor's memories.
His love for Spider is the same thing. Spider really isn't his son. Spider knows this and has no attachment. Quaritch knows this too, but the paternal instinct he has is overpowering.
Would be interesting to see if and how it redirects if he really does have a kid with Varaang.
>>
>>217072677
His life was probably worse than your average wage fuck. Being paralysed and barely living on vet benefits. Drinking to avoid the pain of existence.
>>
>>217072056
Could someone summarize the "leaks" from the supposed alternate cut? I'm not sure if I buy that there was a whole different movie but SOMETHING clearly happened with the original ending, because what we got was chopped to hell and back with characters teleporting and disappearing and essentially a reshot version of the ending in 2. Imagine if Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith both ended with Dooku beating Anakin and Obi Wan then running away after duelling Yoda.

Jim occasionally talked about 6 and 7 and that made me wonder where he envisioned those stories to happen if we are going to a fucking Earth in 5th one.
Like, are we going back on Pandor in 6th? What else would be left there worthy of exploration and important to the characters?
I guess by that moment Jake and Quatrich would be pushing their 60s if they will survive 5th.
It is actually interesting to fantasize.
Despite them mentioning Earth, they didn't say how big would this sequence be. We may actually not even get there with our main characters. Maybe we will just have PoV shift to some new character living on Earth, you know, and it will be relatively small part of the movies.
But i also hope Jim wont abandon Pandora too. I feel like we still had very little of it explored. Wind Traders stuff for example feel like a tease. And we really barely scratched the continents and seas of Pandora. It is fucking big.

4 is supposedly the climax of the series and the one out of all of them that Cameron had in mind when he decided to make sequels. Everything in 2 and 3 is just laying the groundwork for 4, which he says will be able to stand alone as a film.

I think the reason he keeps talking about the money with this one is that he knows 4 is going to go full Space Odyssey with monoliths and Star Children and who knows what else and that Disney will be taking more of a risk with that one than the previous ones
