I don't think it was treated too harshly, I think it got pretty much exactly the reaction it deserved: "Great, but too much like season one." Season three only really drops the ball at the end. It has the most outlandish payoff out of any of the (real) seasons imo, and is conveyed in the most unsatisfying way. Other than that, though, it's pretty fucking good.

it's an anthology series and the seasons don't really have any explicit connection apart from small time shout-outs.
if you're curious and can stomach something different try S2 for the typical LA neo-noir and S3 for some more decade spanning mystery, just know they're not even remotely as good as the first season.
also avoid S4, it's not even really true detective, just some random crime show that got the title attached to it as an afterthought, it's unfathomably bad
