In terms of the plot, Vecna, one of the main villains, uses peoples' secret fears/shames to weasel his way into their minds. By getting his secret out in the open, discovering that his fear (and villain-induced vision) of being shunned by his friends was unfounded, and ultimately having the support of his friends, Will, the one who "came out," was denying the villain this power. It makes sense in the plot that he came out when he did since it was shortly before the final battle, where Will's power would be needed, but I guess for some viewers, they didn't really place enough emphasis on how this coming out really denied the villain one of his weapons (the villain's propensity for doing this to other characters was one of the key plot points of season 4, but given that said season was now 3.5 years ago, I would imagine a lot of people didn't really remember it)
