And why won’t we ever get more Aubrey-Maturin kino again?
>>

>Why the hell is it so damn good??
it was made for men by men
>And why won’t we ever get more Aubrey-Maturin kino again?
because it was a very expensive failure and the studios no longer want to take chances on their laundering schemes

Am I the only one who thinks M&C is a copycat of Das Boot in terms of plot/pace?

>Why the hell is it so damn good??
It's not. It ends with sequel bait without having a sequel, so it's by definition trash.

>It ends with sequel bait without having a sequel
the ending is open-ended, meaning it's the end of this particular adventure but there's room for more. besides that the movie is based on the 3rd and 4th books in the series iirc, so they already didn't even start at the beginning, which makes your comment redundant.

This basically
>>
>>217072285
it lacks romance, which is always a distraction
although that's not really an explanation, more like a consequence of it being good (distracting the audience from a shitty plot isn't necessary)
>>
>>217073596
Romance isn’t needed but the sailing life is already romantic in its own right. And I’d rather watch a bunch of guys being bros than any romantic drama any day
>>
>>217073632
the romance drama is a huge part of the books, but I'm happy they cut it all out in the movie as it would have taken up valuable time.
>>
>>217073776
Only when on land which would have been an abominable bore for a movie about sailing. 99% of it is about naval warfare
>>
>>217073806
I've read through all the books twice, the espionage+romance+politics is easily at least a quarter of the pagecount, in a few of them they barely set foot on a boat for at least half the book. All of it is great as well, highly recommend to anyone on here that liked the movie and enjoys to read.
I agree that it's good they didn't adapt the land parts by having the movie start immediately on the boat. The great thing about the movie is you don't need to be familiar with the setting at all beyond the text blurb at the beginning.
>>
>>217073978
romance was put into films for women to have something to look at, it's unnecessary
>>
>>217074278
Absolutely

They're different movies and the only similarities are superficialities common to the genre as a whole.

The male version of romance is conquest.

It's been 23 years now anon. It's ok to let go.

It's pretty hard to find any similarities aside from general BOATS BOATS BOATS events
Das Boot's Uboat has a slow star but finds sucess, then gets put on semi-suicidal mission of passing through Gibraltar. Miraculous survival spoiled by air raid on the sub base.
M&C starts with getting btfo by French ship they are supposed to neutralize. Tons of minor setbacks, Jonah sideplot, adventures on Galapagos, tricking French ship into coming close for a broadside/boarding, and then the twist to reveal the chase continues.

Says the cavalryman playing second fiddle all his life to either the navy or the American cavalry who smacked his unit around and said trenches are for queers.

People born on the night Master and Commander was released have children themselves now. Some have several. Probably even a few niggers are grandmothers

because Peter Weir made it
>And why won’t we ever get more Aubrey-Maturin kino again?
because Peter Weir retired
>>

It's good because Peter Weir had 30 years of experience as a feature film director when he made it.
>>

And then got shot to shit by the Germans.

Peter Weir directed Truman Show, Master and Commander, Witness and Dead Poets Society.

He is just that good. Extremely underrated director imo.

Master and Commander and Horatio Hornblower WAS the Star trek of the 19th and early 20th century. The Next generation used the bones of these stories as the source of most dialogue and interactions.

The way people bitch about star wars becoming an incestuous rehash of itself because it doesn't look at what inspired the original trilogy, is the same reason why star trek is a hollow shell of itself, because none of it has ever looked at the original adventure novels of men in the 18th century exploring the world and fighting wars all for glory and duty and a higher purpose.

It's truly, TRULY the most kino setting, and nothing will ever top it, it will remain the pinnacle of western canon and culture.
