There are interviews of Ciaran Hinds voicing Steppenwolf complaining how Whedon cut ruined the original story and character. Not all CGI was finished in the original cut (as Snyder left/was fired half a year before premiere) but all the principial shooting minus the Knightmare scene were already filmed before Whedon was hired. This was the basis of the whole Restore The Snydercut movement. You must have really avoided DC movies to have missed out on this info.

The aspect ratio is daft and not what had been intended during the shoot (he spoke about the intended ratio back when the original trailers were being released), and the added scenes make the ending less satisfying by further setting up things doomed to have no pay off. And the Martian Manhunter reveal was very silly and took away from Diane Lane and Amy Adams’ strongest scene in the trilogy
