>>217115809That’s a good one. It’s such a strange mix of realism and fantasy, they correctly show the depravity and madness of war and war looting, but the movie also has a hippy tank commander running around in the 1940s for some reason and other such intentional anachronisms. Val Lewton (of Cat People fame) is often called one of the few "producer auteurs" and I'm not really sure why because he doesn't seem thaaaat impactful on his films but this movie of his was really great IMO. It's also extremely obscure because it was stuck in a lawsuit that claimed the story was stolen and was never actually released until like the 80s or 90s over 40 years after it was made. It's not a ghost story so don't expect that. Actually most of his films try to kinda fool viewers into thinking they're ghost stories when they're not. The other two Val produced I can highly recommend are The Body Snatcher (about a surgeon who is blackmailed by an undertaker that gets him corpses to practice and teach with, something that Ben Franklin was known to do in his quest to further science and medicine)AndApache Drums (just a really solid OG western)Val Lewton in general is super obscure these days but most of his movies are worth a watch, even if the director is much more important than him despite claims to the contrary
>>217118041loved the undead Wayne's World scene
>>217118703I’ve seen the body snatcher but never that or Apache Drums. You ever see Bedlam? It’s absolutely great, Karloff again but it’s ten times better than Body Snatcher and it’s Val Lawton too.
>>217118789I have not, I'll have to check it out. There aren't a lot of his films left for me to watch but like half of them are just ok. The Zombie voodoo one is....ok, the sequel to Cat People is....ok. that's how a lot of his films are but I really enjoyed Apache Drums, it's in color as well. Had a great ending fight scene with the Apaches besieging the town as they home up in the church
>>217119033I’ve seen Cat People and Curse of the Cat People too. They were both meh desu. I could swear there’s a third movie as well but I can’t find it anywhere so I guess not, I must be thinking of the leopard man or something. I strongly recommend Bedlam though, it’s a lot of fun. If you could enjoy both car people movies you’ll definitely enjoy that movie. I’ll have to check out Apache Drums because I love westerns

>>217124331This remind me of Mamoru Oshii "lost" masterpiece Amazing Lives of the Fast Food Grifters. You can find a good copy in the Internet Archive but there are no good english subs, only french ones and from what I hear even those are crap.

>>217117810i actually remember when this movie came out. as young as i was, i remember people mocking it's premise, saying that is was ludicrous and unbelievable even though anyone paying attention at the time knew that we were heading in this direction. this is the same year that saw vin diesel try to carry an action franchise by himself and jennifer lopez as a manhattan hotel maid but, no, a synthetic movie star was just too unbelievable.

>>217124296If we’re going to talk about how movies are made we need to start with something called the Greek chorus. That was the birth of the stage. Then an Athenian named Thespis added to the song and dance of the chorus the speech of an actor. With the eventual addition of a second actor they were able to develop a performative narrative etc… it’s going to take a while to get to Soviet montage theory though. Thanks guys, I've added many more films to my watchlist. Here is a political comedy that's actually quite amazing. It's reminiscent of a time when people thought politics in America was fairly professional and decent. It wasn't even at the time (Bill Clinton presidency) but people thought it was so it was nice and nostalgic. Highly recommend as a great example of what I like to fall "competency porn"

>>217125462
>>217126277
>>217127500Fun fact, the movie did in fact add the slayings at the church simply to be classified as a slasher for the genre appeal. The director has stated quite clearly that this is really the only kill he intended in the script from the beginning. The feeling an astute viewer gets when watching the first killing scene with the axe (which appears from nowhere and never shows up again) that it doesn't quite fit the movie or the character is spot on, it doesn't and you wouldn't be remiss to judge the movie minus that scene in which case it becomes a near perfect homage to the Taxi Driver formula.God do I love that ending though. Both were John Dahl films. I’m unsure whether “Kill me Again” was also made as a direct to video film. I never saw “Kill me Again” on HBO though, so I doubt it was made for HBO. I the case of “The Last Seduction”, while it did get a theatrical release, it was only after the release on HBO, and there was controversy that year, because the first release on HBO disqualified the film from consideration for Academy Awards, which Fiorentino would have been considered likely to win.

>>217140751You're the second person this thread to tell me this is one of the best Val Lewton films. I'll have to watch it soon, it's one of the few I haven't seen by him. I'll tell you what I told the first guy - his most underrated movie imo is Ghost Ship (nothing supernatural so don't expect that) and also "Apache Drums" which is actually in color.
>>217140796I saw it recommended here yesterday and watched it last night. Apparently the entire script was based on a painting and they even gave the artist writing credits, which interested me. It was a very easy watch, it felt almost like a modern movie.
>>217121264I've seen this film and its fucking terrible. Its not one of the best seven knock offs its easily one of the worst
nobody remembers picrel
>>217115453>look it up>it's realWHAT THE FUCK?
>>217141054it was ok
>>217142281I hated it compared to John Wayne one
This only lasted a season but that's prolly good. Just dumb funny shit. Michael Madsen plays his role in such a retardedly funny way and Keith David was made for this kind of crime comedy. The scene where Del is standing in the pouring rain so you can clearly see the wire he's wearing underneath and Keith David's just like "are you wearing a fucking wire?!" that and they way the brothers goof on their dad is fuckin comedy kino
>>217143281Fuck I'm stoned, pic related
The Pretender and Profiler both 1996-2000 NBC shows
>>217140936This was a popular movie on tv. I want to see it again because I saw it like 10 times as a kid.

>>217115013Moose is the GOAT
>>217143758Are you from Germany as well? I feel like it was on Vox all the time when I was a kid.
This one is rare. Pure kino.
Basically the proto Roofman; Busey lives in the attic and stalks Mimi’s milkers; asks her out at the grocery store and she has no idea
That time Sly tried a comedy
>>217117897Kino the highest order!
>>217127391>Also the endingWhat about it?
Unironically love this movie
>>217147577>it's real>Chris Cooper in the creditswtf
>>217147577>>217147683>Common Sense Media rated the film 1 out of 5 and called it "an extreme waste of time"kek
>>217146988I remember we had this on VHS and I don't remember anything
>>217147650Was cool with them stringing up the faculty and burning their uniforms. I've got the sequels downloaded as well waiting to be watched. Pic somewhat related; other pinku series can also be sexy and artistic
Mandatory viewing for anyone who thinks Scottish accents are funny.
