They don't need to be likeable to be sympathetic, and the film has nothing to say about Japan, just the veneer of Japan they experience as sheltered tourists.Even if you find it objectionable, it's an honest expression of Sofia's own experience in Japan for the first time, when her marriage to Spike Jonze was failing and she had an affair with, according to rumours, Harrison Ford. It's basically a French new wave film but set in Tokyo based on the real experience of the director, and auteur work that is objectively well made and well acted. You might not like it but it is good filmmaking.
