It was how even one drop of white middleclass banker blood can taint your whole bloodline and doom you to hell, or "sheol" as the yuppies call it.

The studio deciding against the pilot practical effects was an abomination but I did like the tetris effect. Otherworldly. The short story is the best use of alien thinking.

Nope. MacReady was. You know because the very beginning of the movie shows he's not very smart when he loses at chess against a 1980's computer and ragequits. Yet by the end of the movie he has somehow outsmarted and outmaneuvered everyone else. The Thing was demonstrably more clever than the real Mac, it's the giveaway that it wasn't really him all along. He was replaced from very early on.

Yeah it's impossible to tell if one is a Thing and if this is the case, which one. Both being humans yet unable to trust the other and dying is a pretty fitting ending. We also know that the Thing is perfectly fine after thawing so freezing at the end is not a problem, it knows someone will come check on the base sooner or later and that the bodies will be brought back on the mainland. It can just play the long game.
What I've wondered about is, could both of them be a Thing without knowing the other is too?
