millenials actually believe this character is someone to aspire to be

millenials are retarded, so what?

He actually has a moment of clarity when he realizes he doesn't have a life and transfers to New York to start over. Then he relapses and becomes no life Jim again.

It's funny how the original intention of the show was "everyone is trapped in this shitty office because they are a loser who is afraid of moving on" and this included Jim, who was a young personable guy who had the talent to work somewhere much better but was too lazy and unserious to apply himself. However, Jim quickly became the most popular character and during the show's run, and the demographic of female fans who watched because of Jim-Pam were essential to keeping the show afloat in terms of ratings. Some of the writers have mentioned that the network basically forced their hand into making Jim the likable audience-insert character with his cute office romance, but there are times when the writers hint that his true character is a lot more unsavory.

Jim is a very frustrating character to watch because of this. If the writers were allowed to explore him more realistically, he would have been a much more interesting character. He is a guy who looks down on everyone he works with while refusing to admit he chooses to continue working there. He projects confidence, yet is a coward when it comes to courting Pam. He makes it seem like he's everyone's friend, but when he has authority over them as a co-mananger, he is completely ineffective in exercising authority and loses the office's respect. Towards those he doesn't like, namely Dwight, he is a complete bully. This is why the Charles Miner arc is so good: the mask slips and reveals that, when he doesn't have complete social control and isn't seen as an easy-going cool guy, he is just as incompetent as everyone else. It's a shame we didn't get to see the character fleshed-out like this, and it makes the finale where he magically becomes a rich executive at the startup feel especially unearned.
>>
>>217184657
>makes the finale where he magically becomes a rich executive at the startup feel especially unearned
american audiences don't care about well written arcs, they want to feel good at the end of the day, which is why every sitcom must end with a happy ending where everyone lives happily ever after

>>
>>217184161
This is the point of his character

He makes mediocre men think it's ok to be that way and he makes homely or unattractive women think those behaviors are ok

I've never seen the show
>>
Its funny when you see any of the office equivalent shows whether its something like parks, or superstore, or foreign offices the Jim characters are never as good as him. They either aren't douchey enough or aren't charming enough or lack the near alpha quality he has
>>
>>217183478

one good thing about the UK Office is that Tim knows this and hates himself for it

I don't think he truly disliked Dwight. Also this is the longest post read in years, good job anon
>>

Also Gareth is actually a piece of shit while Dwight is basically autistic so it feels more like kicking down rather than deserved
>>

people who don't watch sports are like vegans, they always have to let everyone know
>>
>>217185429
In the early seasons he definitely did. I do think their friendship developing is one of the stronger aspects of the later show and its shift towards a more happy go lucky tone.
>>

Nta, but I don't watch sports and I don't do that.

when you think about it, many characters in sitcoms are like that
think of FRIENDS, for instance, Ross is the only one who likes all sorts of stuff and he gets shat on constantly for being a nerd
the other guys are just retards who watch porn and sports
when it's not like that, the characters interests are basic pop culture shit, like in HYMIM
>>
>>217184519
I used to feel mild embarrassment when I’d admit I didn’t watch Last Night’s Game or that I didn’t watch sports at all.

Now I don’t give a shit and instead of seeing it as some deficit I see it as a virtue. I’m not some (often) fat fuck living vicariously through the screen for hours on end, developing parasocial bonds and loyalty to some corporate franchise team, even going as far as being captivated by the politics surrounding said franchise.

I don’t derive pleasure from it and I certainly am not going to watch some big game to hop on the bandwagon or feign interest. It’s nothing to me and I’m all the better because of it. I already have limited time and wasting 3-4 hours on a weekend or weekday night would take away quality family time and doing things I like doing. Now I say plainly “no I didn’t watch it I don’t watch sports” and if they look surprised and make a comment I just say “I don’t like sitting in front of a screen for a few hours, I’d rather do something else” and they either accept it quietly or get defensive. Not my problem.

the problem is that the vast majority of "heh, sportsball" people spend their time doing even more asinine shit like watching anime or scrolling social media. if you're reading books, playing instruments, hiking, surfing, woodworking, etc., then that's valid to criticize sports.

Wasn't that the story of everyone in the show?

The company was a mediocre nothing company selling meaningless crap and a dead end job for people with zero ambition in life. Just look at the cast.
>Loser boss with no friends
>Autistic asshole who keeps wanting to pretend his job is bigger than it is
>Burnt out middle age loser mom
>Burnt out loser aging drug addict
>Burnt out loser black guy who is looking forward to just retiring
>Possibly retarded fat guy
>Annoying smart guy accountant that wants to think he is superior to everyone else

The entire crew were no life nobodies with nothing else to look forward to than work their meaningless job and then go home and watch tv, wait to die.
>>
>>217183478
He was supposed to be the normal guy in a cast full of colorful freaks and morons. Except the big personalities of everyone else made it look like he did nothing, liked nothing, and mostly was nothing. Just a normal guy.

I'm more surprised their tiny ass office needed that many daily employees. Even my (relatively small) retail store I work that does $1.3 million in sales a year only has 5 employees, and on a given day maybe only 3 are working. There's no way a paper seller needs an in-house HR rep.

>>217183478
That’s why the original version is best. Tim is more likeable and more believable than Jim. He actually feels like an average joe stuck in a menial deskjob. Most of the pranks he pulls on Gareth are harmless, and often justified, as Gareth is far more toxic than Dwight.

Work is just a place to socialize with other adults until you are gone. Except you get sick of each other more as time goes on and people disappear. Makes you wonder why people were so eager to sign up to be mercs in middle ages and before and get rekt in some border land conflict war. High school never ends... It just gets grayer. Or you just drink the kool aid and enjoy other peoples company while you are still alive.
