The composer is the key figure if you want to understand the movie in the sense that he's the originator of all these good things but simultaenously a mystery and his creative inspirations beyond the protagonist's reach, the simple lesson being this: being enamoured with these things is a far cry from being aligned with the temperament that allows for their creation. The "monstrosity" of the composer is simply the experience of seeing creativity from this conspiratorial viewpoint, a temperament which is ultimately neutered and not conducive to having a good life
