This was just an act, right? there's no way the plurbs sleep like this. THey say it's to conserve energy on heating/cooling, but look at all this fucking wastes space. Look at those shitty futon fucking sleeping bags on concrete. Zosha and Carol probably drove past 5 mattress stores to get to this place, and any one of them would make for a better communal sleep center.
>>
>>217190974
Its not enough space for the amount of people we know are living there but I think its just laziness and low budget in action. It does make a bit of sense that they wouldn't ALL sleep huddled together because diseases though.
>>
>>217190974
It was probably a sanitized version of reality. The plurb are pretty good at propaganda. Just look at that HDP infomercial.

I assume most of them sleep in some tight spaces, bunched together, optimized for space and heating. They would not bother with a full stadium. What Zosia showed Carol was eerily similar to what you would see during a hurricane-type state of emergency where everyone has to work together and hunker down.

I still don't get. How plurbs reach consensus? Where they get their ideas? Such collectivism would make only sense if there is a central intelligence/a borg queen tier of control. How much of the Hivemind is a gestalt and how much is a collective like the Geth? From where such decisions came from? Why it needs to be so utilitarian? From where the command comes? I need answers.

first things first, I wouldnt go to vegas. I'd probably go to Universal Studios. The plurbs should be recreate any location I want with all the sets, props, and costumes they already have on site. There's also a shit ton of restaurants and other amenities right there, if I want to go out somewhere. With it being in hollywood, there's also no shortage of 10/10 models, actresses, and influincers I can fuck my way through.

Not sure where I'd want to stay tho. Main Street might be cool, or maybe one of the resort hotels might make more sense.

Season 2 was one of the biggest fuckups in modern entertainment. S1 was so well plotted and paced, and the finale shook up the status quo in just the right way and set up plenty of new threads, and then S2 was just one big cop out. I'm cautiously optimistic that Pluribus won't follow the same path because Vince swears he has a clear idea of where he wants the show to go in future seasons, but there's always the risk of Sony/Apple execs ruining it.

It's all emergent, tiny fundamental parts plus scale = capabilities and motivations that are powerful and reprogrammed.
The utilitarian part is unspecified, it could also be emergent or it could be a deliberate feature to make the planet's intelligence destroy itself.
They co-opt the planet's energy to send the mind virus signal, then die in the process.
The originator comes along and takes the now empty planet.

I'm pretty sure the only people who even have an apple TV just got it forced on them with a bundle
>>
>>217207821
Nah, that definitely was a big cost factor, but nowhere near 135 million. Renting all of those planes and helicopters was definitely expensive too. Vince is a plane enthusiast and he definitely blew a lot of his bloated budget on those.
They also filmed at location a lot, the Las Vegas stuff must have been expensive to film. Generally every time they have to empty out a big public space to make it look abandoned.

Just finished it in two day.
Overall quite liked it.
I suppose it's extremely slow, the content of each episode fits in 3 sentences.
I like a lot of the scenery, but I still feel there's a lot of blue screen, even on the rooftops.
Will there be an explanation for why they are capable of moving any vehicle but unlearned how to recognize sarcasm and the ins and outs of not being creepy?
Or, given they have energy efficiency incentive, they make no recommendation of not using giant airplanes to fly 5 people?
Also, why would it be against their rules to encourage breeding of cows and then just eating the dead. I mean if they let wild animals free, clearly they don't care to manage how many animals get eaten. I mean I suppose you can explain it by just postulating a strict hierarchy of desires, but yeah I don't know to which extent their selective passivity is coherent.
I suppose it's to keep the tension, but imho Carol doesn't seem to ask many obvious questions when she could. Like, what are most people doing, apart from building a big signal thing.
Not that a sci-fi show needs to be completely logical either, this is just what crossed my mind watching it.

I assume its because they have access to the sum total of human knowledge, and can easily recall objective facts and stuff like that. But they have trouble dealing with the more intangible things like emotional nuance, because that is filtered through the subjective perception of many different people. also, the hive is still immature as a collective consciousness. They will learn to lie, hate, and even kill before the series is over
>>
>>217208449
Westgate is not really on the strip, it's on Paradise Rd which runs parallel to to the strip, but it's in the immediate area. Still it's a busy road, so shutting it down for even a day or two of filming would be a huge pain in the ass. But these days a lot of extraneous stuff can be erased with CGI, too. I think the scene where Carol watches the plurbs drive away on the hotel roof was entirely green screen.
>t. vegasfag
>>
>>217208797
>>217209022
They did recognize that Carol might have been being sarcastic, but as they are an inherently trusting collective, they also had reason to doubt that her words were insincere.

>Also, why would it be against their rules to encourage breeding of cows and then just eating the dead.
Their own starvation isn't a concern for them. And aside from that, enforcing any form of containment or control seems to be against their nature. They could also just overgrow to have enough "windfall", but again, they don't actually seem to care.

>>217209035

Well I want to act that with how the show is set up, I think it's a category error to think of it as being about collectivism at all.

It's not too hard to read the whole thing as a "14 people left on earth" situation. It's not collectivism if several bodies think as one. Every action is following their own goals or incentives, not that of another individual. In that sense, "they" are individualistic. There's no two people where one would do a sacrifice or could put expectation on the other.
desu this also plays into the no concern argument that you bring. It's true.

where one of them is a retarded but powerful (and secretive, but merely due to it being written - the character just don't ask enough)

---

Ah and one blunder which strikes me as almost plot hole'ish is that when Carol is on the plane after airport scene, at the end of the episode, that she asks to get out to "stop the other plane". I mean the guys who let her out are the same as those going with the other plane.
And if Carol would be let to put 1+1 together, she doesn't have to get out to signal that she wants the Pirate lady, she can just tell whoever is flying her own plane.

As someone with difficulty trusting/being comfortable around people the episodes feel less about world domination and more about the struggle to open up to others, allowing yourself to be vulnerable as well as rejecting happiness that comes with it. I won't say it moves me to tears but I look at Carol, Manousos rejecting others and clinging to their... separateness so strongly. At first I thought they weren't taken into the collective because of some trauma that caused them to reject the unity but other characters don't fit that explanation (and the girl who willingly joins the many is a very explicit inversion)

Carol is a faulty character. She was going into the right direction only because of her shock and spite, and even then she ended up burning the bridges with other survivors because she lacks tact.

In contrast, Manuosos is even more spiteful character but is capable of solving the epidemic. He's just going to need Carol and her accident based findings to reach the needed conclusions.

>The originator comes along and takes the now empty planet.
I doubt it. It makes more sense that the virus is merely self replicating and the originators might've even created it by accident and died out. Space travel would take enormous amount of resources and time to be worth it.
>>
>>217209838
>allowing yourself to be vulnerable as well as rejecting happiness that comes with it
yeah, one of the things that jumped out at me was how literally they were acting out relationships like that. The plurbs were LITERALLY giving Carol the entire world, and even that was not enough to make her happy, and even that just wasnt enough
>>
>>217209587
>I think it's a category error to think of it as being about collectivism at all.
Hive minds are collectives by definition. Many parts acting as one.

>And if Carol would be let to put 1+1 together
One of Carol's "faults" is that she treats them as humans and individuals. And as she's so individualistic herself, she's used to doing a lot of stuff on her own without telling anyone. Aside from just being dramatic by running out on the tarmac, she's tends not to direct any of the plurbs in the first place.

i don't understand why Manousos is so autistic and stubborn that he would rather eat dog food, sugar packets and/or starve than accept food from a plurb but he just totally unthinkingly trusts and accepts a package from them. so you think they're trying to kill you via food but that they wouldn't fill an envelope with anthrax or something? he's actually retarded and can't even be a conspiracytard correctly.

>>
>>217214285
He doesn't trust the plurbs because by ignoring them he didn't get any of the information about their motivations and boundaries that Carol did, and he only took the envelope because it was different from the usual meals his mother left him and I guess it piqued his curiosity.

fine. but if you want to argue that he's just "ethical and self righteous" consider the fact that that doesn't really hold for the food situation. he wasn't simply ignoring the food because he regarded it as "stolen" he made a point to go out every night just to destroy it. he didn't leave any form of payment or restitution for it so technically what he did is accept the offering and then destroy it as a form of pointless faggoty protest. in reality if he was actually ignoring he would have stayed the fuck inside and not messed with a plate of food that didn't belong to him.

I remember reading or hearing some scifi/hypotetical science article once, saying that any sufficiently advanced space-faring civilization would want as soon they are able to afford to send out as many "relativistic kill vehicles" (a spaceship with no payload but mass itself accelerating continually to a significant fraction of lightspeed which in impact would be enough to completely destroy planets or even entire systems) to nearby star systems to make sure no other rival civilization can emerge. The virus signal could be a similar concept but instead of a physical interspace missile it's a biological agent
>>
>>217217867
>>217217899
I mean, it is THEORETICALLY possible that the virus is just a natural byproduct of the infinite chaos of the universe. A million monkeys on a million typwriters, and eventually a self replicating psychic parasyte will evolve. Probably could have sat dormant on it's home planet for a million years before some retarded space-faring aliens got infected and gave the hive advanced tech, like genetic engineering and interstellar transmition

I just reread the trilogy a few months ago and it struck me that all the memes about it being unfilmable are actually bullshit. Maybe the first book being the most fragmented and vignette-like would be a challenge, but the later stories are much more well rounded structurally and have enough going on to be translated to the screen with only minor tweaking. I think it would have to be done with a 1940s retrofuturistic aesthetic though, which no studio these days would be able to do right anyway.

I get that it’s tempting that the plurbs can give you whatever you want, but I find it hard to believe Carol and Manousos are the only ones who have any interest in trying to save the world. Like, if your entire family was turned into pod people, you’re just okay with that? That Laxmi lady is retarded beyond belief. And the French guy, he’s an amusing character concept, but would you really be okay with the entire future of humanity being doomed because you get to fly around on a private jet and fuck pornstars?

And Carol is fucking worthless, she is as big a traitor to humanity as the rest of them. I was thinking maybe she was trying to get close to them to learn how to reverse the joining, but no, she was just lonely and horny and straight up got manipulated and seduced. She literally would have just fucked around with her not girlfriend forever if they hadn’t slipped up and revealed they had a way to turn her. Manousos is the only true hero and real human bean in the show, the man is unfathomably based.
>>
>>217220818
The show suffers somewhat from the writers wants to tell their story and molding their characters a little too hard around that concept instead of letting them be their own selves with rational interests. A lot of the other survivors lack any sense of nuance. I was honestly surprised to see it from Gilligan considering how good even his characters usually are.
>>
>>217220818
she talked to them on day 2 and made such a bad impression they never wanted to speak to her again even if she was one of a handful of people in the entire world like them. it's been 4 months and they have all kept in touch. you have no fucking idea what their interests are except for the one piece of information Koomba shared because it was related to what Carol was already talking about. of course she didn't ask anything else because she never gives a flying fuck about anyone else's thoughts or opinions or feelings if they're not directly related to what she is talking about in the moment. we know Kusimayu plurbed but we don't know if any others ever had a change of heart after the initial meeting 2 days after it happened or want to go back because the show doesn't let us know anything about them because it's from the perspective of Carol,
>>
>>217220900

>>
>>217220818
>I was thinking maybe she was trying to get close to them to learn how to reverse the joining
I think that was her plan at first, but then she fell in love with a plurb...

>I find it hard to believe Carol and Manousos are the only ones who have any interest in trying to save the world
Pretty sure we will see more about the other immune people in season 2. There was no point in setting up 13 of them otherwise. And we only really interacted with 5 of them (if we count Laxmi and goat girl).
>>
>>217220900
also the only one who seemed actively against the idea was Koomba who literally argued with her about why they should bother "saving" the world. most were like "save it how?" "do what?" and she had no plan and continued to just sperg out and call them all traitors to the human race because they weren't as angry as she is. if literally anyone else capable of not being drunk and staying emotionally regulated made the case they probably would have been way more receptive. but that's kind of the point isn't it? she's condescending and self centered and doesn't actually care about their perspectives to know how to persuade them.

>>217220966
at the initial meeting they were asking "fix it how?" and "do what?" which are valid fucking questions.

They also imply some things that I really wish were interrogated more in the show, god knows they have the run time for it.
>They say they are really looking forward to Carols book, saying they already have the knowledge of everyone so there is nothing new to read. If everyone's part of the hive mind there is no new culture.
>They skirt the issue of the importance of individuality but don't really go into it.

I still liked it though. Probably one of the best things I've seen in a long time. But they would have had a consultant to setup the biolab scenes, who if they had let him read the script would have pointed out some glaring issues.

They could have done the containment breach better, and considering bioreactors are a thing the cannibalism comes off as cheap shock horror.

>>So humans infected rats with the virus, and the virus made a rat play dead to infect a human. How is it able to jump from rat to human and not infect every other creature on earth when dropped off aresolised?
It seems like the virus can adapt itself. It took a while for it to work on the rats.
It's also possible they created a different version in a lab for the aerosol thing.

It's also possible that the virus does work on all animals, but there is enough fine control for it to deactivate itself in undesirable targets.

Calling a "virus" is kind of wrong in the first place. It's an RNA based machine. There come a bunch of assumptions with the "virus" label that don't have to be true for something that was engineered like a computer program.
>>
>>217224657
Well, they don't think of it as mass starvation, they see themselves as a single organism that can spare as many individual units as it wants. As far as it's concerned, it's just losing a manageable amount of mass.
>>
>>217223724
>There is no way you're pulling someone out of a hot lab after you know they just had a containment breach on their suit and are having a seizure. I get it was a probably dramatic tension thing, but they missed an opportunity to do some gain of function commentary.
I actually don't think humans are that diligent - especially if you want to help your friend.
Actually I'm basically certain she would be brought to a hospital, especially if there's just 2 people.
If you criticize it, I'd rather ask if the Alien message research really is considered so low stakes that it's happening in relatively low security, huge university/hospital like facility with a staff of 10.

>They have every scientist and engineer in their collective and you're telling me they didn't think of this.
Related to what I said in a post above, it's clear that they don't act optimally at all. Like if you wanted to have good communication with the remaining dozen humans, you'd probably not choose the most ick dude around to represent you.

(To justify it you must jump from one speculative attribute to the next and at a chain of 3 jumps I'm not the type to enjoy this. I try not to curb enjoyment by being the one repeatedly pointing out that it's just written with a goal in mind and that goal not being all holes tied up like hard scifi. But yeah it's probably just convenience for the story. The ugly guy is more interesting in his role for the show than it would make sense for him to be there. Such loose ends are almost always the situation with writing practically overly powerful entities in stories.)
>>
There is no way that the show will wrap up with scientific rigour because it has already been inconsistent. It tricks you into thinking it has a deep scientific lore with the idea of synthesising a virus from a transmitted RNA sequence, but this would only make sense if Earth's biology had been studied by the aliens prior to creating the signal. That theory doesn't work because of when they said that the signal may have been transmitting since before humanity's existence. The only way it works rigorously is if either the aliens came to Earth to study specimens or if life in the universe began elsewhere and Earth's biology was descended from an alien race, hence the compatibility. Those just don't seem like the conclusion that will be drawn seeing as this was already glossed over in the first season. It would also be possible that alien telescopes could analyse Earth's atmosphere to backwards engineer the RNA codes but that seems even more fanciful.

Also you can consider that it's just not possible for an RNA program to give people telekinesis even via radio waves.

When the plurbs are trying to be convincing they are creepy and that's for the show. The plurb behaviours are inconsistent based on what Gillian wanted the audience to feel.

Sorry guys but this is just a fun show for midwits to follow along with and really it's about internal conflict and a strange lesbian romance and childhood trauma - it's not about le science (bitch) and you will be disappointed if you're expecting a science based payoff. The science part is handwaved away.

I'm in security
That was not low sec. There were at lest 6 SO's on duty with what looked like level 2 vests, probably 4 rovers and 2 CCTV monitors. That's fairly high sec for after hours. I know high throughput hospitals that have had active shooter threats with about that level of security staff.
Even if it was low sec, that would be wrong. I don't care who you are, post COVID? We're talking about a Xeno Virus. And professionals in that context would have better policy and would be drilled into them. You'd have a big red button that summoned a MET team, not drag her out and break quarantine. I think there could have been a better way to do it.

As for your example, I'm okay with the guy they chose. Its clear she was uncomfortable with her mayor fixing her house. The 'creepy' guy also comes across as benign.
Though I understand what you're saying, and agree somewhat. But a first year biochem student would think of that. Hell, I'm in security, and I will make no defenses about the average IQ in my field, and I thought of that.

I still enjoyed it a lot, but it does put drama first which is a sickness I feel has infected media. Considering the resources they would have had on hand to make this show they would have had industry consultants on hand, and it wouldn't have been hard to ask them if this made sense or there is a better angle. I'm not asking for hard science, I'm asking for internal consistency. They are presenting a reality set in modern day, so if there are alterations they need to be explicit about it. Stargate managed it better over 10 seasons IMO and that was getting into Star Trek level fuckery.

It's kinda fucked up the pluribus made Zosia fake an orgasm during lesbian sex
>who says it was fake?
The hive doesn't experience what its individuals do, so Zosia's body could only react with her own biological impulses. As a straight woman her body would be disgusted and sickened by Carol fucking her. The plurb overrode that deliberately as part of the performance.

She was kind of enjoying the massage though

the ayys sent out an RNA sequence that was based on the components that make up their RNA so that any species that found it they could know their planet and biology was compatible with theirs. the midwit is you.
>>
>>217227570
>Sorry guys but this is just a fun show for midwits to follow along with and really it's about internal conflict and a strange lesbian romance and childhood trauma - it's not about le science (bitch) and you will be disappointed if you're expecting a science based payoff. The science part is handwaved away.

Saying this while being a dumb bitch that doesn't know all the nucleotide bases for RNA and DNA have already been found in asteroids

I've seen people talk about the plurb like some masterful manipulator, but they could have simply not told carol they could plurb her until the day arrived

>I've seen people talk about the plurb like some masterful manipulator
those people sound very stupid

Who said Zosia wasn't bi?

>>217227666
At this point there not much reason to assume that the hive mind isn't actually well meaning and honest about its intentions. The only sinister part about it is that it's not taking no for an answer regarding assimilation, which just seems to be its nature.

>What do you think a Virus is?
A machine is artificial, man-made. A "computer-virus" would be a better comparison than a biological naturally-evolved virus.

Natural viruses are limited by random mutations. If you could program RNA, then you can just skip the whole evolution part and for example just bypass the immune system, or take over other cells to do more than just copy the "virus". Imagine an RNA payload that "unpacks" into a full-fledged AI that can make decisions.

so now we know the hivemind lied to karen in multiple instances, foremostly that they need her consent to turn her, which isnt true, because they were aware of the eggs before they made the video lying to her (with john cena) and the communication being transmitted via a specific radio frequency and not some bullshit "we just know".

also, how stupid is this women. airplane mode? yeah, that'll keep the government from listening in lmao. but that moment made me realize, this show is genious from a misogynistic point of view. only a women can be this stupid, vapid and dooming all of humanity with her emotional outburst. i am women, hear me roar. if it werent for paco over there, we would truly be fucked.

for all the watching paint dry scenes and fluff, i will give it another chance IF it gets another season, just for the fact how accurately stupid karen.... sorry, carol is written.

>>217228561
>foremostly that they need her consent to turn her,
no they said they needed her consent to harvest her stem cells from her hip
>>
>>217228561
They didn't lie, since they never said directly that harvesting stem cells from the hip is the only way to get them. We hear this from Koumba, who would have had no reason to inquire further about eggs.
>>
Ok but consiser this.
IF by some happenstance plurbed individuals retain inner true consciousness (which I doubt, they're probably in a coma, but it is possible) then being around Carol was the only human interaction Zosia was getting besides actually servicing Diabetes.
If they are NOT conscious at all, then she is not actively harmed by having her body used as a schlick toy by Carol.
Yes it is rape in both cases, BUT it is not as bad as you put it.
