SAC is one of my favourite animes. Can I piggyback off this thread and ask for anime recommendations? I took a look at the /a/ catalogue and it's just tranny shit. I also hate modern anime, absolutely not interested. guess you would call me a normie, whatever.

I just watched 1997 HXH and 2003 FMA and quite enjoyed both. Currently watching 1996 Samurai X and it's really good. I'm specifically looking for 4:3, cel/hand drawn animation preferably with English dubbed. I don't mind giving 'shounen' stuff a go as long as it's not TOO comedy focused. I bounced off Shaman King. I tried Inuyasha a while ago but it was too romance focused. Might try it again.

I thought Psycho-Pass was pretty good. It's not GitS level but it's a sci-fi dystopia with cyborgs and shit, the main characters are a government hitsquad who don't trust the government, it has a female lead (although, she's very different from the major). There are a lot of similarities, and I thought the premise was pretty cool (basically, Big Brother has eliminated 99.99% of violence, but the remaining fraction are still causing problems; also, being exposed to violence constitutes a memetic hazard that corrupts your "psycho pass" and causes big brother to target you for censure or elimination)

You should give Elusive Samurai a try. You'll know after one episode whether it's up your alley or not.

Inuyasha doesn't get better than it is at the beginning, it just drags on longer and longer. It's for 14-year-old girls who struggle making friends. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's hard to get into it as an adult.

You should definitely watch all the Ghibli movies. They're all different, and they're all amazing.

I second Bleach, although it takes a while to get cooking and I vastly prefer the subbed version. The dub has a lot of flat performances, even from otherwise good VA's.

Cowboy Bebop, obviously.
Akira, obviously.
Ninja Scroll, obviously.
Outlaw Star. Very similar to Cowboy Bebop.
Deathnote, obviously.
Initial D, Like Fast and Furious, only wholesome.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners, it's fast and fun.
Hajime No Ippo, extremely wholesome boxing anime.
Mob Psycho 100, obviously.
Berserk '97. Don't be thrown off by the 1st episode, plow through to the 2nd. Just trust me.

That's probably enough for a beginner to start with. Good luck to ya.

Oh yeah, you might want to check out pic related, too.

>I second Bleach

Also, I forgot the most important thing, make sure you SKIP the "Bount" arc. Episodes 64-91. It's filler and it's barely even mid. Most of the filler is mid, but it's also really easy to skip.

I know it sounds funny, "Oh, Bleach is good, you just have to skip half the episodes!" But I'll just say, it's an anime with high-points and low-points. The high-points are insanely high, and the low-points are not great, but not terrible.

If you skip the Bount arc, you're skipping the lowest of the low-points, and you won't miss out on anything pertinent to the main story.

I second this, I was initially put off by the first ep and dropped it, then took about ten years before giving it a proper go and found it was a fantastic character driven story.

Another anime I initially found off putting just because of its title was Bastard!!, then I watched it and found I really liked it.
There's a remake with some better pacing but overall just isn't as good, plus its dub lacks Daran Norris voicing Dark Schneider, who's performance really makes the character

A lot of REALLY GREAT anime takes a few episodes or even a season or more to get good.

Gintama is like that, the first . . . like 50 or so episodes are straight-up not even good . . . but once it finally DOES get cooking, it's one of the best anime you'll ever see. And unfortunately, you can't skip the beginning because all that set-up is entirely necessary.

It's really NOT a beginner-friendly anime.

Same with One Piece, the beginning is super slow and really not impressive . . . but as it goes on, it gets better, and better, and better, and better, and better. But the beginning is necessary to set up the world and characters.

In fact, as I think about it, Bleach is the same deal. It's actually not a good one for beginners, but it's excellent for an intermediate-level anime fan. So save that one for after you've already watched all the other ones I listed.

Gintama is a comedy anime that gets a lot of traction for doing parodies and references of other anime like Bleach and Dragon Ball, so you have to save it for when you've already seen those. But it's great for jaded viewers who feel like they're starting to run out of good anime to watch and they've already seen all the big ones.

Mostly I would say, watching anime is a lifelong thing, and just when you think you've run out of good anime, another one will come along and blow your mind, you just have to keep looking and keep trying new ones.

There's no real formula for figuring out if an anime is good or not, not all the new ones are bad, not all the old ones are good, some of the lamest-looking ones turn out to be great, some of the greatest-looking ones turn out to be lame, some of them start out bad and get a lot better, some of them (a LOT of them) start out great and then turn to shit. Some of the best-looking ones are boring and stupid, some of the worst-looking ones have the BEST stories.

Most of all, you can't go by what anybody says, you have to watch it for yourself and decide.

I rate each episode. If the average rating drops under 6/10, I stop immediately, if it's under 7/10 at the end of the season, won't start a new one.

Just stopped Claymore after fourth episode.

One Piece starts strong. Definitely not slow, always moving forward getting the crew, getting to conclusion of Alabasta, getting to Sky Island and then it gets slow. Imo it needed more fillers. Fillers you can skip, canone eps where pretty much nothing happens are worse.
