The ending pissed people off and the rushed pacing was worse than usual but the show had been going downhill for a while.People were just delusional about it and refused to listen to any criticism so it was a huge surprise to them when the show that hadn't been very good for a while continued to be not good and failed to stick the landing they wanted.
Seasons 5-8 were of equal quality.4 is elevated for Joffrey's wedding but the trial is pure garbage.

Not only that they fully embraced the 'ohfuck' reaction moments which made the general audience love the show so much. Hardhome a season before cemented the idea that things didn't need to make sense as long as something crazy cool happens and season 6 is literally filled with it. Jon ressurection, Hodor, Destorying the Sept, Battle of the Bastards, R+L=J reveal, Mel being old, Ramsey dying, Arya getting stabbed to death and being perfectly find the next episode. That season is non stop, which is why it appeals so much to the casual audience.

But at the time those missteps were mostly forgiven because the nature of adaptation and the fact they were condensing the story down quiet a bit. Season 5, had some pretty fucking awful side plots. Everything in Dorne was garbage, everything with Sansa was straight up retarded. BUT Hardhome was 'awesome' and unexpected so everyone just forgot about the shit first half of the seasonSeason 6 was just the payoff season. Writing was shit but it also confirmed a million different theories people had, and all our heroes win so people like it. Season 7 was shit. The Wight Hunt was the first time I noticed casual viewers being like 'ok this is just fucking dumb' they no longer had the crazy payoffs for people help people forget. People started to turn on the show. It's saving grace was the naive idea the shitty ideas and plots in season 7 would payoff somehow in season 8.Then season 8 and there was no pay off. Characters started to act even more idiotic and there was no hope for a future season to come fix things. All people were left with was what was on the screen and a bunch of hilariously telling behind the scenes clips.
