The combination of Fincher’s video-game-like direction (movements impossible for humans, such as climbing down a building’s edge and moving through subterranean channels), decadent photography, and dirty, noisy, neurotic electronic music is aesthetically displeasing.4. The movie is a self-aggrandizing philosophical mess, where characters embody ideas to such an extent that mythology is more important than arcs, a journey, or the plot itself.5. Marla is a pathetic and, honestly, offensive female character—so underutilized that it weakens the impact of the ending (with the cliché use of the Pixies) and also reinforces interpretations of a gay subtext in the movie.6. The dark humor is nasty, especially the mockery of cancer victims-- just bad taste.
