At worst there is a level of "high football worship is bad" to it but it acknowledges that football is the only thing keeping the town alive and that some players DO use it to fucking escape poverty to go to school for an education and a level of intellectual naval gazing about all the nobility of poor white trash small towns struggling to survive in the wake of the collapse of the 80s Texas oil boom (the book was written in the early 90s; the TV show and movie set it in the then present day 00s).
