Nowadays Peter’s job doesn’t even seem that bad.
>oh no I’m getting told to do the same thing by five different managers
At least they’re all telling you the same thing
>oh no my boss asked me to come in on the weekend
Just tell him you can’t. I ghost any call or text when they try to pull me in. They stopped bothering me.
>sit at desk doing medial work
Sounds easy

you never worked in an office and dont know how it alienates you into having an existential crisis if you dwell on it too much
>>
>>217227069
well they didn't have youtube and stuff to browse back then to kill time. you literally just had to pretend to work after you finished your 20 minutes of actual work. do you know how fucking boring and dehumanising that is?

All that 90s angst stuff is extremely grating from todays perspective

There was an ancient form of streaming called AM/FM radio.
>>
>>217227282
I worked in an open office for several months. There was a super annoying black guy who would not shut up about Jesus and trying to convert people. I actually had to go to HR to complain about him.
>>
>>217227305
never saw an office where theyre playing music while taking calls and stuff. and most of the time the computers didnt have an internet connection, everything was done on in house servers and stuff was faxed. it was hell.

About ten years ago I went on classic American road trip to several national parks and Deadwood. I remember listening to American radio for the first time. I absolutely fell in love with Rush Limbaugh. It completely sucks that my country doesnt have an equivalent to him. The closest we have is Ezra Levant and hes a jew.

The point is that they could already tell the job was a mix of time wasting makework and being underpaid for the value they were creating with the real work, but with no real option to skip the makework or demand adequate payment for the real work. It just hadn't yet reached the point where they had to go into debt to sustain the lifestyle required to keep the job. Anyone with a 115 iq could tell this was happening and that their chance at a family or a retirement was in serious jeopardy.

Try it, OP. It's more soul crushing than stacking boxes. Nothing you do matters, anybody can replace you at any time and everybody who enjoys the office is an insufferable twat with no personality. I'd rather live on the street than take another office job.
>>
>>217227305
And they'd tell you to turn that shit off within a 30 minutes and get back to work

>>217227557

I felt like throwing myself out of the window when I worked at an open office software dev house
people who haven't experienced it don't know, but those that have, they know that a soul exists because you feel it being crushed every day

now I work blue collar and life is so much better
>>
>>217227557
Moving boxes fucking sucks too. Avoid dead end jobs, period. Women shouldn't be the only ones that get a fucking cush job to browse Facebook. Stop telling men to break their back for LESS than some bitch gets paid to make coffee. There is no pride in being a slave for corporate profit on the inside...or the OUTSIDE. "I don't deal with office politics"
>Brb no healthcare

>Brb it takes you 6 years to make 50k
>Brb they hire illegals to replace you
>Brb you have to work in the snow and the rain while some fat guy sits in a trailer or office making double what you make

Let's stop with the manual labor is better line cause it ain't
>>
>>217227069
at the time peter's job was manually sifting through decades old code to modify it so it wouldn't shit itself when the year rolled over to 2000. in 1999. meaning his job was basically over within a matter of months

peter's job today would be manually sifting through jeetcode and desperately trying to make it into something competent and/or wrangle them into into being competent knowing full well his job could be outsourced at any time.
>>
>>217227636
He'd also be working on contract with no expectation of employer loyalty and likely no benefits either, replaced by jeetscum in 6 months
>>
The real play is to do all your actual work for the week on Monday then spend the rest of the week slowly releasing your work while you spend time chatting to friends, taking extra long lunches with naps, and leaving early.

>>217227622
>Let's stop with the manual labor is better line cause it ain't
No, it's not the labor type that matters, it's being able to see the outcome of your labor that makes work fulfilling. All of that motivation and fulfillment disappears as soon as work a hierarchy reach a point where it has to add a middle layer of management. The more separation there is between the executives and the people doing the work, the less sense of autonomy and influence the lower level of workers will have.

Any kind of work feels more worthwhile if you don't have to do it while feeling like you're a pawn or a cymbal monkey that's dancing to the music that someone you never interact with is providing.

I've worked in nearly every level of organizational complexity that exists in the modern economy, from huge corporations to being fully self-employed. And the upper limit for a business treating its employees as human beings and trusting them to do their jobs competently seems to be somewhere around 30 people. But on the flipside it becomes untenable for an owner of a company to effectively manage and delegate work out to any more people than that amount. Eventually authority has to segment out to foreman or managers, but the executives/owners still need to be involved and aware of what the work entails or things go bad really quickly.
I worked for a small business that went through that transition over 14 years and could see it happening. I was the 4th employee and love my job up until the point that they hired their 40th employee.
>>
>>217227557
>It's more soul crushing than stacking boxes
Have you ever had a job like that?
I used to work as a lab assistant, which involved a lot of manual labor and it was both soul crushing and body crushing.
The thing with manual labor is that at some point you become so good at it you don't even have to thing so you find yourself with 8h to think about how much you hate your job.
My programming job is soul crushing too, but at least my body doesn't resent it.

>>217227783
>No, it's not the labor type that matters, it's being able to see the outcome of your labor that makes work fulfilling.
Yeah. Lots of people in my field are here for the money. I'm trying to find a new job doing something I actually care about instead of working 8h a day for a bunch of kikes in an industry I absolutely hate.

I once had a manager who would tell me to do several contradictory things in the span of a few sentences. Not sure if he was fucking with me on purpose of if he was just that stupid. One day I had enough of his shit and calmly told him how inept and stupid he was and that nobody respected him, they were just afraid of his daily temper explosions. I told him he was giving me fuel against him with each one. He was quaking with rage and told me that he was going to make my life a living hell. I told him I can quit at any time, but he can't afford to, and he can't even fire me without screwing himself over worse. And that he already was making my life hell, so go ahead and try harder, it won't make a difference. I stayed for a couple more months and then one day I knew that he really needed me there, I just stopped showing up. I hope he died during covid. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

No. I just keep grinding away. Part of the fun part of the job is that since we only sell to existing customers we can access their consumer profiles which contain a lot of telling information that we then use to tailor our sales pitches to the customer. I entered the workforce right as smartphones and mobile internet got good enough to stream YouTube and podcasts so I experienced the tail end of the old culture
you were straight up expected to appear to be working at 100% capacity for the entire time you were at your desk and maintaining the facade in silence was insanely frustrating and demoralizing
having YouTube videos and podcasts made it 100x easier to do

>>217229144
I did this until the company slapped blocks on computers for productivity virus and bandwidth protection. DNS blocks didn’t catch everything, so we just fucked around in sandboxed internet. Once smartphones came around the culture changed back.

Advice for dealing with HR: document in silence. If your called in for something you’ll have evidence. Keep it strictly factual, but add in little phrases like: this action made me feel uncomfortable and distracted.

HR exists solely to prevent the company from being sued and most of them aren’t lawyers so a little documentation can cause a freak out. Use for self defense because they can play their own games. It will keep you from gettting steamrolled.

Mike Judge was an office worker for like 2 weeks and was so traumatized by a man not wanting to give him a stapler because it kept getting stolen it broke him.

You can work from home almost whenever you like now, there are vera desks, office treadmills and on-site gyms. My office has an on-site masseuse (admittedly she's booked months in advance) and programs that encourage walks outside for mental health. They match 401k which is basically free money for not leaving. They give 30 hours of free therapy. Hundreds of hours of paid leave and sick time.

To say it's a bit different now would be an understatement.

I don't mind menial shit as long as the supervisor isn't on my case constantly and I can work independently.

>Just tell him you can’t. I ghost any call or text when they try to pull me in. They stopped bothering me.
The company was actively engaged in downsizing, he would have been fired.

>hey anon, how are you doing?
>reasonobly bad
>Then smile and keep doing my thing

It's that easy
If you're having awkward conversations at work it's on you.
Work dinners are a bitch though

Alright give me a bullshit job like yours then.

I was on a desk job for a couple years suffering through that shit and I'm much better off now that I moved to a blue collar job.
Not having to deal with my old boss changing his mind every time we talk and blaming me when shit doesn't workout, working off the clock fixing the messes my coworkers made..
Now I see him every other day, nod to whatever bullshit he says and do my thing until I finish my shift.

Nigga seriously couldn't sneak a Game Boy? I did that in school.

You’re brown
>>
itt: browns idolizing 90s “soul crushing” jobs because they already have no souls and the status of “replaceable mindless cog in an office” is infinitely higher than their current status of “trash.”

160IQ White European here, I can't get a job precisely because of said browns being imported for the specific purpose of replacing me. What do?

The company I work for is like 3 years old. I was the 13th employee and now we're pushing 40 people. So far what you described hasn't set in yet but they want to keep expanding. Our CEO is on weekly review calls and is active on Teams which is cool but what you said about a small company hits the nail on the head.

It is if you have an imagination and cognitive abilities superior to an automaton. The office is for people who had kids too young and now have no other choice but to slave away to feed them.

either become a very successful criminal, or work somewhere where you'll find a job easily and will be valued, then once you've saved enough money - start your own company and filter out all shitskins.
do not try to play by their rules, as you're set up to lose.

>work somewhere where you'll find a job easily and will be valued
Wow thanks retard oyu must have 170IQ at least.
>>
>>217227153
No, if you were decently smart you could probably just sneak a copy of Doom in on a floppy.
I did a work-from-home job until recently and they used monitoring software to see what were doing 24/7. They timed bathroom breaks to prevent slacking, and if you spent more than like a minute or two idle you'd be at risk of getting chewed out.

You have to live it to understand it.

There's nothing wro.g with wanting a better life. The 90s were prosperous so existential issues took place. If there was a real war/economic collapse all the new kids would say we had is easy cause atleast things are safe.
