gore, sad themes, etc can be good when they're used for some greater point or as part of the story
sad movies that are just unrelentingly nihilistic for no greater point other than making manic depressives feel sadder, like Leviathan, are stupid
gore-fest that are just hours of watching innocent characters be brutalized for no reason, like AHS or anything Rob Zombie has made, are the same way

Movie makers are trying to convince us that there is an audience that enjoys excessive "uncomfortable scenes", cringe, gore, and main character torture. There isnt. They just like making people uncomfortable. Best example is BJ Novac talking about The Office. His favorite episode that he made was Scotts Tots, the most cringe and uncomfortable episode. He LOVES the fact that he caused so much cringe and discomfort, not even caring that people regularly skip the episode. I also stopped watching Black Mirror for this reason.
