What went wrong? Genuinely
>>217230209They hired a pedo
Nobody cares about capeshit anymore
>>217230209No passion, nor boldness in his projects. His heroes stand for nothing.
His wife died of cancer in 2011, look it up
He was brilliant at Guardians of the Galaxy, but they were comic book Z-listers nobody really cared about before him. Hiring a quirky auteur for those movies is an inspired decision. You don't hire that guy to anchor your new universe however, especially with the mainstream of mainstream heroes, Superman himself. Gunn is clearly reigned in by the studio with his Superman. They want him to play it safe and thus generic, without his recognizable Troma flair. They were depending on name recognition and previous success with Gunn, but the results were less than stellar.
>>217230209he's a postmodernist that actually hates herosim. he'd be better off directing a watchmen movie.
>>217230209He struck gold with gotg by making a trad early 2010s comedy (a genre now extinct) which the middle aged people could enjoy with their superhero obsessed kids. But he broke himself and devolved into doing the same old formula. It was like episode 4 or 5 of Peacemaker with the characters standing around arguing (a scene I have seen too many times in Gunn’s movies) and I felt like I broke out of the matrix. I was initially excited on the announcement of him becoming CEO, ya know heres a guy that’s knows ball, but that was under the assumption he was going to be objective with the property and capitalize on Henry Cavill’s popularity. Maybe renew Young Justice too even though 3/4 weren’t good it’s still something to watch. Instead he shut down literally everything and it’s all James Gunn’s DCU(tm). At least he wasn’t able to touch The Batman. Then when you get into his background, the pedophile themed parties, trying to take all the credit for gotg, it turns out he’s just kind of an asshole. And the mediocre box office is a simple reflection of the mediocrity of his work. So now we’re just waiting for the next head to come around whenever the Netflix deal goes through.
>>217230262He also said origin stories shouldn’t be done anymore which are like the essence of superhero’s. Fuck that guy.
What do you mean what went wrong? Did something happen?
>>217230209dude looks like colonel sanders but lesbian
>>217230209He's not good at grand narrative blockbusters. Superman looked like shit; worse than his low budget movies for some reason. He's sub-Joss Whedon.
>>217230209he didn't pimped out his sexy wife enough
>>217230209as soon as he was even mildly critical of the israeli terror sponsor state, he was out
>>217230209They gave him free reign, Gunn is the type of creative that needs to be kept on a leash, hence why the Guardians movies worked, because of the Marvel creative commitee.
nothing. creature commandos and peacemaker were kino. superman hit the right notes. it all depends now on how the non-gunn projects do
>>217230209one of the only consistently good writer-directors working today.
Superman is terrible. Gunn is talented and did well in Game of Thrones, but for traditional superheroes like Superman, Batman, or Spiderman, he's terrible. The worst thing about his version of Man of Steel is its lack of great cinematography, just to avoid getting serious like Zack Snyder did.
