The death of fantasy/Sword and Sorcery is just a shift in audience and creators. Unabashed S&S is kind of seen as corny and juvenile by the non-fantasy crowd. While the fantasy crowd kind of falls into two camps, the Game of Thrones sort where they try to dress it up so they don't have to be embarrassed by it or the nerds who try to turn fantasy into video games where they spend more time arguing over magic systems than the actual story of the book/movie.
