>Started out as a one script, but got too big so James Cameron split it in two

It really shows. They're pratically remakes of one another, with some dashes of the first movie in Fire and Ash.

Okay but why you would split one film in two and then make another one to be remake of other one?
Sounds lots of extra work

To tell the full story.

Try to make sense. If you make a story that you have to split. You split it. You don't keep the first part and then remake the second part to be the first.

It's just a bunch of tech demos with alibi "plot". Plants, water, fire, probably sand or something next.

really wish cameron would let the japs make a Way Of Water anime slice of life
it was so comfy before the forced conflict

Avatar 2 feels like a GIANT filler episode.

Movies often repeat themselves, but flip it around. It's pretty basic story telling. The marines go in and fight the aliens, then later in the movie the marines fight the aliens again. The issue is Cameron copied the beats too. The Na'vi win in part 2 and win again in part 3. He added a down beat with the death of whatever his name was, but it feels way too much of a copy for sure.

Almost all the major story beats in 3 happens in 2. Instead of one story split in two parts, it's a repeat the same story with different exposition that couldn't all fit in one movie

3 concludes all the arcs of 2. The people calling it a remake didn't care about the previous movie so they don't remember the characters' arcs.

The horror.

ERM AKTUALLY THE WATER PEOPLE ARE STILL IN IT SO IT'S LITERALLY A REMAKE
>>

Anon, "splitting a script in half" doesn't mean to literally cut it in two and call it a day. You still have to give the two halves a proper three-act structure with satisfying setups and payoffs to make it a worthwhile standalone experience.

This doesn't even make sense, it would be like if Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 were the exact same movie.
>>
If it was called "The Way of Water 2" it would make a lot less money and people would be less angry at it.

Way of Water is slower paced and arguably has too many "just hanging out" scenes, but there's a growing consensus among fans that it's the best Avatar movie so far.
It does a lot right while not being in a rush about it, such as having the best and most satisfyingly structured 3rd act, where the real climax doesn't even involve any action

He said he wants to make an Animatrix style anthology series set in the Avatar universe

Some. But there's a ton that's still unresolved. Quaritch and Varang are still alive, the humans are still on Pandora and more are still coming from Earth, we still don't know exactly what Kiri or Eywa are, and the humans know it's possible for them to breathe the atmosphere. It's like splitting Fellowship of the Ring into two movies: the big stuff is not even close to being resolved.

Except nothing happens. They just reset the board for the next movie.
