It was the most meh movie I've seen in a long time. I liked the parallel between the MC and the guy who he tries to shoot with an oven mitt on, and the fact that at the end he helps the same force (automation) that caused all his issues, but it wasn't enough meat for 140 minutes.

Which PCW should I watch next? I was thinking Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. I enjoyed all movies in the pic btw, but that is how I would rank them so far.

I do think Oldboy is a bit overhyped, but that flashback/suicide scene may be one of my all time favorite scenes.

It was decently entertaining but apparently I completely missed the point. The "poor" family are genuinely evil, they're lazy self-interested scumbags who only seem to get any enjoyment from being subversive parasites. It's in the name of the film, right? Nope, apparently the rich family are the actual evil ones because...the mother couldn't stomach the smell of sewage water. I was painted as a sociopath for pointing out all the clear examples of the writer showing us that the poor family aren't the good guys.

Misunderstanding movies is big with the American consumer, because of their obsession with good VS Le ebil. A worldview that precludes any nuance. Compare with No Battle After Another, the scene where DiCaprio asks some Mexicans for the way. The scene is obviously comedic and making fun of the character (he is an activist for Mexicans yet he doesn't even speak Spanish) but in the public discourse it was turned around to Mexicans actually being endeared to him because he whistles to communicate, which we are told Latin people do (pretty racist in its own right, but because we say it isn't we behave as if it wasn't). Truly wild.

Talking of which, can anyone American explain to me how the depiction of Wakanda in black panther 1 (skyscrapers with thatched roofs, men in grass skirts literally chucking spears at each other going "ooga booga") is empowering to black people? I only watched the first 15 minutes of that movie, so maybe I missed something.

I mean, we did see her try and we can understand why they'd rather just pay for a maid. The husband...had a chauffeur. In the end, they paid a fair wage for other people's skills. Are they basic skills any adult should have? Sure but they didn't commit any crime to compensate for their inadequacies, things few people lack entirely.
A century ago we were washing clothes and scrubbing floors by hand, they took hours out of our day, and we automated that away. Ask your average person if they can clean every article of clothing by hand, the world was a dirtier place back then too with all the soot and mud you couldn't avoid. Have you ever tried to get blood off a shirt? It's difficult. Are we pretentious douchebags, or are we so well off that we just never learnt how and have more than enough money to delegate that task to robots? I guess it's not pretentious when a robot is involved. Is that how you view yourself when you send a suit to the dry cleaners?
It's all relative. In the end, they did nothing wrong. The husband provides value to the world and married someone who grew up within his tax bracket which meant that she's shit at basic tasks. Instead of hoarding it like Scrooge McDuck, they paid above market rate probably for some dude to drive a guy from A to B, and some old lady to cook and clean. Am I meant to dislike these people? I can't find a way to do so without disliking myself.

Maybe later, I honestly don't have the time. I'm ill now so I can watch a few films until I feel good enough to get back outside. Even if I had the time, there's a mountain of stuff to watch in English before I bite the bullet with an actual commitment to foreign films. I've watched a few here and there but I'm not a Criterion Collection type of guy, I know a few that are, they're the ones that begged me to watch the film just to hear my opinion, I wasn't aware it was going to be that controversial. They still bring it up months later, especially if I'm being introduced to someone tangentially interested in films or working in the industry. I don't mind it, I'm just surprised that the only place I'll find any agreement on the issue is /tv/.
